Frankel, two-time recipient of the Cartier Award as European Horse of the Year, is set to begin his stud career at Juddmonte Farms’ Banstead Manor Stud in Newmarket, England, when the breeding shed opens later this week, and a star-studded roster that befits Frankel’s reputation as one of the finest racehorses in history will await him. A long list of Grade 1- and Group 1-winning mares from every major Northern Hemisphere racing jurisdiction as well as a handful of prominent Grade 1- and Group 1-producing mares are scheduled to visit his court during the breeding season. A Juddmonte homebred, Frankel was retired by Khalid Abdullah last fall undefeated and a winner of ten Group 1 stakes. The 5-year-old son of leading international sire Galileo will stand his first season for a fee of approximately $198,000. “Frankel’s book of mares is as one would hope and expect for ‘the best racehorse ever,’ ” Juddmonte general manager Philip Mitchell said. “We are most grateful to all the breeders in Europe, America, and Japan, who have put their faith in Frankel and as a result we have one of the most impressive books of mares that a first-season sire has received.” Some of the high-profile mares booked to Frankel include U.S. classic producer Oatsee, Kentucky's reigning Broodmare of the Year; Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Danedream; Eclipse Award winners Stacelita and Zagora; Japanese champion Vodka; multiple Grade 1 or Group 1 winners Midday and Dar Re Mi; and Grade 1 winner Balance, a half-sister to Zenyatta. Other notable mares include Arrive, Britain’s broodmare of the year in 2008; Binche, Britain’s broodmare of the year in 2010; Divine Proportions, European champion filly in 2004; Lady Vettori, dam of French classic winner Lope de Vega; Midsummer, dam of Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Midday; Musical Treat, dam of 2010 European champion filly Finsceal Beo; Soignee, dam of Stacelita; and Zomaradah, Italian champion female and the dam of Irish classic winner and successful young sire Dubawi.
