Fort Larned sires first foal in Kentucky

Fort Larned, winner of the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Classic, sired his first foal Jan. 26 when the Awesome Again mare Belvedera produced a bay colt at Calloway Stables in Murray, Ky.

The colt is the first foal out of the unplaced Belvedera, who sold to Calloway Stables while carrying the colt, at the 2014 Keeneland November breeding stock sale.

Fort Larned stands at Adena Springs South in Williston, Fla., for an advertised fee of $12,500. He stood his first season at Adena Springs’ main base in Paris, Ky.

Fort Larned won 10 of 25 career starts for earnings of $4,471,322. In addition to his Breeders’ Cup Classic score, Fort Larned also won the Grade 1 Whitney Invitational Handicap and Stephen Foster Handicap, as well as the Grade 3 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap and Skip Away Stakes.

Homebred in Kentucky by Janis Whitham, Fort Larned is out of the winning Broad Brush mare Arlucea, whose six foals to race were all winners, also including two-time Grade 1-placed Izarra and stakes-placed Moonport. His second dam is two-time champion Bayakoa and his extended family also includes multiple Grade 1 winner Affluent.
