Florida Derby for Flashpoint

Hutcheson winner Flashpoint will try to stretch his speed 1 1/8 miles in the Florida Derby.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Flashpoint, runaway winner of Gulfstream Park’s seven-furlong Hutcheson last month, has been entered in Sunday’s $1 million Florida Derby and not the Swale as originally expected, racing secretary Dan Bork confirmed earlier this morning.

Trainer Rick Dutrow had said that owner John Fort was leaning toward bringing Flashpoint back in the seven-furlong Swale and not the 1 1/8-mile Florida Derby ever since the speedster’s impressive 7 1/4-length victory in the Hutcheson on Feb. 26. But Fort wavered just a bit on Wednesday, saying the Florida Derby is such a prestigious race and that it would be one of his greatest achievements in racing if he could win it.

Entries for the  Florida Derby will be drawn at a special ceremony at the track at 1 p.m.
