Florida Derby among options Violette mulling for Economic Summit


Trainer Rick Violette also left the door slightly open that his Economic Summit might run in the Florida Derby after the son of Malibu Moon sizzled five furlongs in 59.80 at Palm Meadows on Wednesday. Economic Summit is coming off a fifth-place finish in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby.

“He worked very well and his gallop out was terrific,” said Violette. “There are a lot of things we could do from an allowance race to the Illinois Derby. Or the Florida Derby if the race were to fall apart. Right now there are three real horses – Soldat, Dialed In, and Stay Thirsty –going in there but it is $1 million so you have to think about it. He seems to really be coming around now. He was a bit of a coward at Tampa. He didn’t want to give up his position, but the race seems to have moved him forward.”
