MUCHOS BESOS hasn't run in a while, sinc egamely beating some nice N1X foes at BHP June 22, but Puype is strong off the bench and some nice August works say he's ready. HADFUNLASTNIGHT comes off 2 nice 2nds here this summer and it's obvious he likes it here (5-2-2-0). O'Neill is going strongly of late and the class hike encourages. CARBONITE comes off a strong 2nd vs. optional claimers here Aug. 17. That was a nice bounce-back after a dull run at this level here July 21 and there's a sharp :47.80 work Aug. 28 to indicate he's feeling good. Closer Looks >>

WILDCAT CANDY came back after nearly 16 months to be a decent 2nd here July 17 (behind Spring Up who came right back to beat winners) and then was a sharp 2nd at this level here Aug. 10, rallying smartly after blowing the start. He looks primed to get his diploma and a nice :48.40 work here Aug. 25 says he's feeling spry. SPIRITED TOUCH has shown talent vs. tougher and worked smartly for his first start after getting a couple months off. Baffert, of course, is superb off the bench. FIGHT THE POWER is a scary new face having shown ability this winter at OP. He hasn't run on synthetic and hasn't run since Feb. 23 but he's worked well for a trainer (Autrey) who's picked his spots well for his raiders. Closer Looks >>

PROMISCUOUSSUANCES dueled and fizzled sprinting on turf at this level Aug. 14 but on the stretchout may not have to deal with such early pressure and surely with that pedigree there's no reason at all she shouldn't do well at this longer trip. TANGERINE TICKLE ran 2nd, well ahead of the top pick in that Aug. 14 race, and she has the speed to keep the top pick in her sights throughout. ONLY JOSIE KNOWS set a brisk pace and ran 2nd in her first route, on the main track, here Aug. 22. She has speed and her pedigree says turf is no problem. Closer Looks >>

SUSHI EMPIRE boasts some strong works including a super :46.80 4f move here Aug. 28 (2nd fastest of 47 that day). She also gets Bejarano and being by top-class runner and sire Empire Maker may well have talent. MOSTRO BELLA chased the brisk pace of Awesome Baby in her Aug. 4 debut and finished 3rd to that foe, who was entered in Saturday's G1 Del Mar Debutante and may be the West Coast's top 2yo filly. She likely doesn't face anyone like that here. JOJO WARRIOR boasts some sharp works (bullet 5fs in :59 at BHP Aug. 29) for Baffert, who of course does very well first time out and who routinely at this meet unveils his best 2yos. Closer Looks >>

AOTEAROA looked super blasting maidens in his debut here Aug. 4. He didn't just win easily but did so geared down and earned a nice Beyer (72). Any move forward off that run makes him tough. JEDI MIND TRICK blasted maidens at SAC July 19 and to show that no fluke came here and first time vs. winners and first time on synthetic gamely beat some nice guys Aug. 15. GANGNAM GUY won smartly over maidens at BHP June 30 but then missed the start in the Graduation Stakes July 31. To his credit he ran on well for 3rd. He gets blinkers, has worked well since and Bejarano, who likely had options here, stays aboard. Closer Looks >>

CLENOR came out firing in her U.S. debut, biding her time early and powering home to win going away. It's first time vs. winners but this gal surely has talent and trainer O'Neill has mentioned this gal's being pointed for stakes so this is her first stop before that. NESSO looked super whipping maidens on dirt at CRC June 21. There are big hurdles here (first time vs. winners, first time on turf, first time routing, first action in 2 1/2 months) but she's worked strongly, is not offered for a tag again by Belvoir (who claimed her for $25K out of that debut) and pedigree-wise turf and the mile shouldn't pose a problem. E EQUALSMCSQUARED was a sharp 2nd in the Landaluce at BHP July 13 to show her quality. She was no factor in the G2 Sorrento here but moves down in class, to turf and to a route, all of which can help. Closer Looks >>

SACRED OVATION has been knocking on the door and comes off a good 2nd vs., tough elder Strong Wind (who came back to run 2nd in a turf sprint stakes here the other day). He's not only down in class but faces 3yos only, and that can add up to an overdue win. STAR ROCKER is 2 for 2 on turf, including a nice win over Cal-breds here Aug. 9. Obviously the surface suits and while this is a tougher spot he may well be up to the task. He's got speed and versatility, a nice combo. ANKENY HILL is interesting. He invades from EMD where he ran only on dirt, but he's bred for turf, has worked smartly here of late and Bejarano takes the call, no small matter. LUCKY COTTON found stakes foes too tough in the Real Good Deal here Aug. 2. He drops and also returns to turf, the surface on which he posted his lone win at BHP June 1. Closer Looks >>

GEORGIA boasts plenty of strong works for Baffert, who routinely sends his 2yos out ready to fire, particularly at this meet. Not only has she worked well but she's bred to be precocious as this $200K sales buy is by Tiz Wonderful (G2/G3 SW at 2) and 2 of her 3 sibs are winners including West Citizen (4 wins, $40K). BELLE OF THE FLEET is the proven commodity having finished strongly to be a shrp 2nd (beaten just a neck) in a spot similar to this here Aug. 19. COSTAMAR has worked well for Bonde (bullet 6fs in 1:12.40 Aug. 18) who routinely has his firsters ready to fire. AE AS RULERS GO as worked well for the suddenly-sharp Drysdale barn and is kin to Switch (6 wins, $1.4 million, multiple G1 SW). Closer Looks >>

EGG DROP did everything right in the G2 Royal Heroine at BHP July 6 but just couldn't quite get to the very talented Schiaparelli. She's been freshened since with plenty fos strong works int ow. HALO DOLLY is one tough cookie. She won this last year and coming off a smart win in the Solana Beach here Aug. 18 figures the one to beat again. CUSTOMER BASE ran into a couple buzzsaws in Tiz Flirtatious and Lady of Shamrock in the G2 Mabee here Aug. 11. She doesn't face anyone of that caliber here and her prior starts stamp her a good fit with thse. Closer Looks >>

EVEN TO THE MOON ran into a nice winner (Tamarando) in his debut here Aug. 18. He showed good speed to chase the pace and stayed on well for 2nd and with that under his belt any sort of forward move should be enough to handle these. GO FIRST is the only one in here who knows what if feels like to actually finish 1st as he 'won' here Aug. 7 only to be DQ'd and placed 2nd for drifting out late. At least you know he has the talent to win a race likes this and he's worked well twice since. SUDDEN RUMOR got knocked around at the start of his Aug. 7 debut but ran on nicely to finish 3rd to GO FIRST. He finished with good energy so he's got some ability and a better start would surely help. Trainer D' Amato is 3 for his last 7 (43%) 2nd time out. Closer Looks >>

CERVARO finished full of run to be 3rd in a mile main track even there Aug. 4. That was his first start in 7 months, however, so he can surely improve. There's a bullet work Aug. 26 (6fs in 1:12.40) and he handled turf just fine at SA this winter.LAYTON REGISTER ran on well for 3rd as the 5-2 favorite in a spot like this here July 28. That was his first West Coast start after campaigning back East so he's eligible to move forward. CORINTHIAN'S SONG ran 2nd, beating 'REGISTER by a half-length in that July 28 race and 5 2nds from 10 starts show he's got ability. He figures to break through one of these days. Closer Looks >>
