The 4-year-old colt Cornucopian always has overflowed with talent. He showed that in his February 2025 debut, winning an Oaklawn Park maiden sprint by a widening 5 3/4 lengths with a truly elite 101 Beyer Speed Figure.
A dead-end foray onto the Kentucky Derby trail, a long layoff, and a fifth-place finish earlier this month in the Churchill Downs Stakes might’ve made one forget just how talented he is. Cornucopian issued a loud reminder Saturday at Churchill.
Taking the heart out of a speed rival after pressing a strong pace, turning back an upper-stretch challenge from a solid graded stakes-class sprinter – nothing could stop Cornucopian in the $275,000 Aristides Stakes. Flavien Prat guided him to a 1 1/4-length score and Cornucopian was going away after sizzling six furlongs in 1:08.41.
“He’s still figuring it out, how to run,” said Bob Baffert, who trains Cornucopian for a huge partnership. “Today, he was hitting another gear there in the end.”
People had high hopes for Cornucopian long before he raced. By Into Mischief and out of Magical World, by Distorted Humor, Cornucopian sold at a yearling auction for $1.1 million. Away from the races from April 2025 through January 2026, Cornucopian won an allowance race and the Grade 3 San Marcos before finishing more than six lengths behind victorious T O Elvis in the seven-furlong Churchill Downs.
Ultimately, Cornucopian ($3.56) might hit his highest level showing his brilliant speed in six-furlong races like the Aristides. He had no trouble keeping up with the very fast Mad House, who broke on top from the rail and went his opening quarter-mile in 22.20 seconds. It was Mad House who could not keep up with Cornucopian around the turn, but as soon as Cornucopian buried Mad House, Roll On Big Joe, tracking from third, pounced.
Roll On Big Joe collared Cornucopian in upper stretch and might even have poked his nose in front past the three-sixteenths marker, but Prat steered his mount right to meet the challenge and Cornucopian responded. No match for the sharp winner, Roll On Big Joe held second by 1 1/4 lengths over third-place Gold Sweep.
“I think this is a good race for him to move forward,” Baffert said.
Cornucopian very well might have run the best race of his career, and that career spans just seven starts. Raw talent has animated Cornucopian all along, and now he is fully putting it to use.
