DRF Plus Preview

Race 1

Brilliant Melody
This barn has been getting the job done with turf sprinters and this filly made it look easy in her latest start while getting over this turf course for the first time; runner up from latest returned to win next out here on 8/14 going 5f over turf vs. 25k OPC's with a 75 Beyer.
All On the Table
It might be best to give this mare a race when considering the long layoff but she did earn a career best Beyer Speed Figure sprinting over this turf course last year; runner-up from latest returned to win next out at BHP on 12/13 going 6f vs. 32-28k claimers with an 81 Beyer.
Sweet Assay
She has to be regarded as a top contender in this spot after jumping it up along the Beyer Speed Figure scale in her first start back from a layoff in her latest outing; Bejarano has won with 6 of 18 (33%) mounts for this barn in 2013.
Since a promising career debut, her form has headed in the wrong direction, and she will need to be much sharper than she was the first time she raced over turf; winner from latest returned to win next out here on 7/24 going 1m vs. 62k OPC's with a 99 Beyer, and 3rd finisher won next out here on 7/28 going 1 1/16m over turf vs. N1X rivals with an 84 Beyer.
Golden Production
Sire wins with approximately 12% of his turf starters and G3 stakes placed dam won 6 of 39 starts for 178k, including 5 of 32 turf starts for 171k; this filly is a 1/2 to stakes placed Warwick Wonder (8-39, 218k, including 2 of 9 turf starts for 52k); 3rd finisher from latest won next out at SA on 12/31 going 1 1/8m over turf vs. 40k OPC's with an 83 Beyer.
Upbeat Mood
Multiple stakes placed filly looks like she fits right in with this bunch and she was a sharp winner in breaking her maiden in her only start at today's distance; she owns big early speed and going to look for her to be involved in the running every step of the way.
Wrinkle Room
This filly has never run a race that is fast enough to suggest that she can keep up with the top contenders in here and looking at this as being a very difficult step up in class for her.
Sleep Tight
She needs to see a scratch from the main body of the race in order to draw in, and even though this would be a tough assignment for her, she has run well in both of her starts sprinting over this turf course.
Raucous Lady
She was in good form racing at Zia Park at the end of last year, but she's going to need to really step it up over what she's shown in her two starts in 2013 if she's to have a say in the outcome.
She's stakes placed sprinting over this turf course, and not only has she been in good form lately, but it's interesting to see her making her first start after a claim for a barn that does very well with turf sprinters.

Race 2

Langfurs Lightning
Displayed decent early speed on the stretchout last month and now makes the all-important first visit to the n2l class; very interesting item on the turnback especially in light of the most recent superior workout at five-eighths; consider.
No Contingency
Aimed too high in his local debut when moving into a rapid pace at 7 furlongs; while there are other pure front-runners in this field, he could prove the speed of the speed on this cutback; seems worth some follow-up if the odds are enticing.
No Rachmones
Goes back to blinkers after tiring in his Chicago campaign this year; broke maiden over this course just about a year ago and in game manner; workout pattern shows progression and Gomez, who was aboard for a solid showing late last season, returns in the irons.
South Floyd
Unlucky colt has survived a series of races which featured lengthy speed duels and now makes his first start for these connections; blinker equipment can help him focus but it remains unclear whether he can withstand the pace pressure that seems likely from both flanks; tough call.
Wise Boss
Lost serious ground when defeated a month ago by Congregationalist but that key foe draws a difficult post today; even with the light package here, it seems doubtful that he will be the primary pacesetter and therefore, he cannot be endorsed as the one to key on top.
Zip Cat
Has been training well for this local debut but he has no known rating gear and lands into a field with several pure front-runners; beaten favorite makes his first attempt in this softer class yet still will get a severe test for endurance; could certainly utilize a few key late scratches.
Judge Carr
Considering the pace nature of this field, this gelding could prove the right value play and is capable of the upset; did not have the smoothest of trips in the last appearance and will appreciate the more intense half-mile fraction that will be the case today if all runners go.
Mystical Mark
Similar to the previous runner, as his one-run style fits this group nicely; one of several in this crew trying the n2l class for the first time, he can move forward now at inviting odds; should be closing rapidly in the final furlong.
Could not gain from outer position in the last test and the same fate may await here; cutting back to six furlongs may help somewhat as he was dead game in the race 2 back; should offer a square price.

Race 3

Full's Figurehead
Speedster draws the fence for the drop in price after fading from her pace efforts in the local debut run; gray should be firing from the bell from here and her lone pace foal is drawn all the way on the outside; given a clean break it looks as if they'll have to run her down to win.
Lia Juliana
Drops after failing to rally into a quick clip in her first local start; she hasn't shown much early interest sprinting and that's not going to help her much in this bulky field; barn and pilot have had rough stands but this gal's recent numbers do suggest they've found a level at which she fits; limiting her use to underneath in exotics.
Warren's Goldie
Fresh filly turns back to sprint in her local debut after being given time off a weak route try at Hollywood; she owns some back synthetic numbers that fit in here and the pilot aboard for her last score returns in this spot, but she hasn't run particularly well first time back; siding with others.
Frequent Fame
Removes the hood for the turn back to sprint after coming up short late as the chalk; mare has suffered from wide trips of late and she has done a majority of her damage over synthetic footing so maybe the return to her preferred trip does the trick for her; contender.
La Torera
Gets a new pilot while dropping in half in claiming price for her first start in nearly 3 months; 6 year old ran big to beat better at Keeneland this spring while making her first start off this barn's claim and her local morning moves have been perked up of late; giving her the nod to return running.
Unkept Rendez Vous (FR)
She's another dropper for a barn that hasn't had much luck at the current stand; she's yet to hit the board in 7 stateside starts and her recent drills aren't anything special; nice to see Bejarano stick and this may be the right level for her, but she'd need to go seriously unnoticed on the tote to warrant more than underneath exotics consideration.
Removes the hood for her first start in 11 months for an outfit that hasn't seen the winner's circle from limited starters this year; mare boasts a steady return tab, but doesn't have any early foot and looms a long price in the comebacker.
Secret of Success
They'll give her shades for the turn back to sprint in her second start of the local stand; she has shown some decent route lick of late, but her recent poor finishes are pretty tough to overlook and she'll get another new pilot for this one.
Returns to the level of this barn's claim 2 starts back after failing to finish the course in her local return; she's proven at the level and did return to work since that last debacle so maybe she's over whatever was ailing her that day; new pilot has won all of her 33 races this year at Los Alamitos; if she's past the bump in the road she can prove a big threat here.
Three Cuties
Been away 5 months since failing to factor in the downhill turf sprint and now she'll drop in for a cheap tag; don't know that the heat's pace dynamics benefit her, but both of her wins came in 3 local spins so maybe the taste of the water here does the trick for her; can't count her out.
Didn't have an impact on dirt upstate and now she'll return to this circuit for her local debut; she hasn't been as good in her 3 starts for the barn this year as she was last season and will get another new rider for this one; longshot.
Raisin' Cain
Held well for second money after arguing the fractions from the bell in her first local start at the level; she should again be prominent and worked well last week for this, but she moves to the outside starting slot and her main pace foe is drawn on the fence; won't be 35-1 this time and will have to earn it.
Warren's Judy
AE tries better after beating limited winners in her local return; she's earned both of her victories here and last weekend's sharp drill says she retains her solid form so it wouldn't be a surprise to see her factor from this tracking draw if she draws in.
AE was beaten less than 2 lengths from an outside slot at the level last time; she could against be the beneficiary of a pace duel but she will be returning less than 3 weeks off a career best Beyer effort.

Race 4

Red Sharp Humor
Finished 4th and 5th in his first 2 career races racing on DMR synthetic with blinkers on; today the hood is added back off the long layoff and for the 1st time since August, 2010; two summers ago posted a career-best Beyer speed figure rallying well at longer than this on the DMR green; the 2-back winner repeated in an SA-40K claimer with a 92 Beyer; graduated on GG grass at today's distance; will be taking a wait and see approach.
Oak Kye Why
2010 winner at today's distance on the DMR green; he is a tough customer when he makes the lead as he's done in each of the last 3 starts; career-best Beyer sprinting so that may be his best game?; win rider from last pair sides with Surrey Star; 4%-winning fresh trainer does not add to the appeal.
Sebastian Flyte (GB)
Off-the-pace runner cuts back to his shortest-distance test since February when finishing last in a Grade 2; he is a 2010 winner on DMR grass at today's distance; the new trainer does well (20% winners) 1st-time out with newly-acquired runners; gets 1st-time Espinoza to ride; getting up in time is the main concern.
Has not raced past 7F yet; his sire won 3 times at 9F on turf; his dam finished 7th and 10th in two routes one on turf; last was his 1st time away from a 32%-win trainer and it produced a career-low Beyer; know him early but unsure about late.
Surrey Star (IRE)
Keeps rider Flores who seemingly had other options here; shortest-distance test of the year today; he is 0-for-4 during career at today's Mile distance but has hit the board in a Grade 3 and 75K event; beat the 2-back runner-up finisher who Beyered 84 in his next-out DMR-32K-claiming win.
Copper Bay
Has just 1 other career start in a claimer and it produced his diploma-earning victory at today's distance on SA grass; 1st-time Gomez winning at 23% for the trainer since 2012; the 89-day layoff for a 6%-winning fresh barn since '12 is a big concern.
Mr. Bossy Pants
December, 2011, was his only Mile grass race where he broke 2nd then finished 2nd on HOL green for a 40K-claiming price; great sign that he drilled his best Beyer since February, 2012, in latest and continues with the win rider; 1st time on Del Mar Turf but looms a logical contender for win honors.
Midnight Crooner
Positive 2-pound weight swings from the favored in-the-money losses vs. Surrey Star and Facoltoso; has declining Beyers since the claim; like it fresh; 3 of his 5 wins occurred off 45-day-or longer layoffs; hasn't run a bad race since the Del Mar Derby; loves this Mile distance going 4-for-7 during career overall; reunites with the May-win rider; big factor on best.
Facoltoso (GB)
Finished 6th and 8th in 2 other DMR grass races; he was purchased off his lowest-USA Beyer when blowing an easy lead; new barn is just 1-for-11 first-off-the-claim since 2012; the 3-back show runner Beyered 96 in his next-out BHP-optional claiming win.
Tippety Tap Tap
Exits his lowest Beyer since February, 2011, in his 2nd career start, on SA turf at 9F; finished 5th, 9th and 10th in 3 DMR grass losses the latest when outrun at long odds 27 days ago; dull-7th place finish in his last Mile test April, '12; have not seen him rally in recent races or anywhere like his February, 2012, win at 9F.
Danderek (GB)
Big post change from the rail to a wide-gate break for this; finished 5th and 7th in two races at 1 Mile during career cutting back to his shortest-distance test since January, 2012; keeps the win rider; know him early then hopes to hang on late.
Key Decision (ARG)
The 9 minor awards leap off the form at you as a runner who often races well in defeat like last when troubled at the gate break losing all chance when defeated by Danderek; last victory was June, 2012, a career-best Beyer on BHP grass gate-to-wire at 1 Mile.
Joe Carl
Re-claimed by the trainer after this late runner could not get his rally going on synthetic; 2013 win was at 1 Mile, his career-best Beyer was at 1 Mile on dirt and ran well at 1 Mile on synthetic 2-back; last grass start was October, 2011, when finishing 7th-beaten nearly 8 lengths in a TUP Mile-turf 39K event.

Race 5

Clouds Clearing
Fair gate workout 10 days ago adds to the appeal; the gelding's sire won a G3 stakes and 632K overall; offspring of Lucky J.H. have won 1 of 11 debuts; the dam won 2 of 10 and 42K and this is her only foal to compete.
Granted several chances already yet he did hold on fairly well in his first local appearance; subsequent workouts have shown steady progression and he should offer decent betting value here; worth some follow-up.
Cinmars Dance
Newcomer hails from Cindago who won 2 of 3 and 98K (his descendants have scored in 6 of 30 initial attempts); the dam won 2 of 13 and 39K; among the winning siblings is 49K earner Gertrude.
Solid effort first time out but against weaker competition than this; his sire won several G2s and 1.04 million; the dam went 6 for 37 earning 272K; winning siblings include 63K bankroler Depth.
Song of the Times
Firster was sired by Time to Get Even who amassed 150K and whose progeny are 2 for 12 as far as winning their first test; the dam won 1of 3 and 16K; sib to 15K earner Musical Miracle; latest a.m.move shows vast improvement.
Three Strike Rule
Nowhere in that maiden voyage in early June; his sire won of 4 and 77K while the dam was without a tally in 5 outings; sib to 150K earner Luscious Lonna; can improve suddenly with the drop into the claiming realm.
Sooo Major
The gelding's sire was a pure turf runner who scored at the G3 level while earning a total of 423K (descendants of Drum Major are zero for 1 in debut attempts); the dam won 1 of 9 and 21K; sib to 22K earner Topper's Ghost.
Grifters Mark
His sire was unraced but offspring of Game Plan have done fairly well first time out, winning 38 out of 310: the mom won 1 of 13 and 15K; among the winning siblings is 22K earner Gallantly; shows average work tab of late.
Sir Barclay
Used up in a speed duel first time out against better company; his sire won multiple graded stakes and 715K; the dam involved was unraced; winning siblings include 92K earner Pulpit's Express.
Back to the level of 7/4 where he turned in a solid showing, a race where he made 2 moves; the colt's sire won 6 of 25 and 423K; the dam was without a victory in 8 tries; sib to 87K earner Musical Grade; interesting item despite this outpost.
Punxsutawney Phil
Quit early in both appearances; the sire is the versatile McCann's Mojave who banked 1.51 million; the dam went 5 for 24 earning 183K; sib to 86K earner Sweetrayofsunshine; cannot endorse at this time.
Encouraging half-mile drill from the gate only 5 days ago; his sire is G1 turf specialist Good Journey who earned 1.73 million (his progeny are 8 for 68 first time out); the dam won 3 of 14 and 90K; this is her only foal to make it to the races.
Sailors Brother
Adds blinkers after 2 game efforts thus far showing different running styles; his sire won just over a million dollars and multiple G2 tallies; the dam won 5 of 19 and 227K; this is her only foal to compete; needs much luck to draw in.
First-timer was sired by Vronsky who won 3 of 11 and 135K and whose descendants are 5 for 51 as far as winning their firstventure; the dam won 1 of 25 and 76K: sib to 15K earner Whilly Pink; upgraded in the latest half-mile drill.

Race 6

He may have just been overmatched in last; the race over the track can only help and he has enough speed to gain a decent position; ran well for the bug two back; expect better result this time.
Stalked to no avail in last but maybe connections had this race in mind all the time; like the series of drills since the last race and note Gomez was up for the last win; he has tactical speed but can sit and still perform; rates upset glance.
Floating Feather
Two of his 8 wins have been local and note he won for this price and for $32K here last year, both for this rider; 6/9 winner repeated in a $32K claimer, then ran out of the money; with his style, backers have to hope they go bonkers early and the race falls apart.
Surf N Ski
Troubled in the debut, the rest of the races are solid; he proved he could take the heat of a speed duel in last and live to tell about it; place horse in maiden breaker took a maiden $20K claimer next out, ran in the money twice since in $40K starter land; threepeat well within the realm.
Master Chef
Hollendorfer has thought enough of him to take him back multiple times; protected in last, he's beaten tougher and was only beaten a half with 2nd here in 2011 in a $40K optional; winner of last repeated in the Grade 1 Crosby here with a 98 Beyer; proven off the pine; major player.
Indian Classic
Only one poor race and he was troubled when way overmatched that day; he has been handled by a number of today's foes and got to figure P Val will put him in the race from the sound of the bell; capable barn due to get rolling.
Pulla Train
How high might the expectations be for this guy?; pretty high as he is kin to multiple stakes winner and over $900K earner Feverish; bullet 6 days ago should have him on his toes; interesting.
Candy's Sunrise
Must find a way to turn the tables on the chef among others; show horse in last won twice since, the last in a $25K state-bred optional; runner looks fit off the 6-furlong drill on the 11th; must be left in the mix.
The last time he was offered for sale he won with a career best 88 Beyer; place horse in last cashed next out in a $62.5K optional with a 93 figure; repeatedly proven off the pine, Bejarano hired; contention goes deep.
Door's Open
Fried in a duel in the only off effort as she makes her synthetic debut; the first 2 August drills here suggest she has taken to the surface; 5/31 show horse has won twice since, the last in the $200K Real Good Deal; he was inching toward the winner in last; another threat in a good betting race.
Life a Riley
Sadler sending out nothing but live horses; considering the layoff, you can build a case he will move forward here; off a career Beyer, nice move a week ago and he has a right to grow into his skin as kin to near $300K earner Leesider; look out.
Raised a Secret
Nearly 4 clear two back at the strange distance; he made the nice move to get within a head of the leader last time before reality set in; he doesn't have to be 7th early on this time and note Stevens has made this meet more about quality and good decisions rather than quantity; another solid contender.
Passing Game
Gameness was on display for all to see in last but you don't quite know how much it may have taken out of him; he likes to cut it close even with the A game as 3 of his 4 wins have come by a head; would be careful here.

Race 7

Fine Assay
She looks like she's going to need to find a way to step it up along the Beyer Speed Figure scale in order to prove to be the one in this spot and she has been beaten by a number of today's rivals in her recent races.
What a Spot
Her career debut was encouraging performance and she obviously deserves another chance to see what she can do over turf; like the idea of her moving to turf and stretching out in distance while making her second start back from a layoff; this miss is a 1/2 to multiple G1 winner Coil (7-14, $1.1 million, no turf starts); Stevens has won with 10 of 40 (25%) mounts for this barn in 2013.
Scooter Bird
She ran well in breaking her maiden just two starts ago and she might be ready to get back to that level of performance while meeting up with winners for the second time and making her second start after a layoff; Maldonado has won with 5 of 18 (28%) mounts for this barn in 2013.
Stakes winning miss has run well in both of her starts over turf and she's out of a dam who won 8 of 16 turf starts for 103k; after a steady diet of stakes races she figures to appreciate the class relief, and her best effort makes her tough to deal with.
Smooth Talker
One of two signed on in here for the Proctor barn and can't help but feel that What a Spot is the slightly more interesting of the two; however, this miss is another in here who might be set for better while meeting up with winners for the second time; certainly not going to count her out of it.
Burns Turn
Can't ignore what she's done since moving into this barn and she ran well in her first route attempt in her latest start, a race that saw her chase a fast early pace; Bejarano has won with 17 of 54 (31%) mounts for this barn in 2013.
Broken Sword
She took down a minor stakes in her career debut and she's run well in her three starts since then; she's an interesting player while being equipped with blinkers for the first-time, but's it's probably worth noting the presence of Bejarano elsewhere in here.
Multiple stakes placed filly has shown the ability to step up with a decent performance on her best day, but she does need to find a way to dig a little bit deeper through the final furlong in order to come out on top.
Diocesan Policy
Sire wins with approximately 15% of his turf starters and dam won 7 of 39 starts for 138k, including 1 of 10 turf starts for 25k; this filly is a 1/2 to Tillman Hall (5-45, 33k, including 1 of 8 turf starts for 13k); she looks like she's stepped it up in her two most recent workouts.
Sassy Badger
She's had a few chances to show us what she can do and she's going to need to step up with a performance that earns her a career best Beyer Speed Figure if she's planning on threatening the top contenders in here.
Sunset Time
She needs to see a scratch on the main body of this race in order to draw in and it looks like she's going to need to produce a career best performance to get the better of this field; winner from latest returned to win next out at EmD on 7/14 going 1 1/16m in a 50k stakes with a 78 Beyer.
Bares Tripper
Stakes winning miss has performed well in her recent starts over turf and the winner from her latest race returned to win next out here on 8/9 going 5f over turf in a 111k stakes with an 80 Beyer; Gomez has won with 14 of 47 (29%) mounts for this barn in2 013.
She paid immediate dividends for her connections after winning a stakes in her first start for them after a claim her latest outing; she's worth keeping an eye out for in the event that she finds her way in off of the Also Eligible list.

Race 8

Tiz Vegas
She's the only one in the field going MSW to a seller for the first time and love the series of local drills; Yakteen great with this move; he is 6 for 20 or 30% the last 5 years MSW to maiden claiming; 11 for 40 dam took a ton of stakes, won twice at 2, banked nearly $500K; both siblings won multiple times; both banked 6 figures including 7 for 27 performer and $185K earner Photo Shopped; if she can run at all, she figures to show it here.
Perfect Tango
Pleasantly Perfect about 14% with debuters in a 176-runner sample; sire didn't run at 2, was a flat-out monster, took BC Classic on way to over $7.7 million career; dam was unraced; this is her first to race; miss looks fit enough.
Ara Best
Best Minister 0 for 33 with firsters; SW sire took 4 of 20, banked over $250K; dam was unraced; all 3 siblings won; top kin Brother Ernie banked 4 of 26, banked nearly $60K; drill 7/20 suggests she has speed.
Big G Secret Crab
She has lost ground late in every race, now has to go an extra sixteenth; hustling rider takes call and runner comes out of a decent fray as the place horse won at this level next out and the 7th finisher took a maiden $7500 Prairie Meadows claimer; 1 for 5 dam earned almost $12K; 1 of 3 sibs won; that runner, Big G's Dance, took 5 of 23, banked about $45K; will at least muddle the pace.
Lemonade Springs
Boxcars every single time, needs a total reversal of fortune; connections would love to see her mature like top kin My Maloof Rocker, a SP near $325K earner; can't boost.
Glad's Gals
Miss is figuring it out and she has a feel of the surface now; with a clean break it could be a new ball game and she should be more focused with the blinks; place horse two back took a maiden $25K Santa Rosa claimer 8/7 with a 63 Beyer; dam was unraced; this is her first to race; respect.
Gin Jan Lizzie
Tribal Rule about 14% with debuters in a 338-runner grid; sire graduated as older horse, took 2 of 4, banked nearly $80K; dam 0 for 8; this is her first to race; could need experience.
Moonlight Splitter
Puype 4 for 22 or 18% the last 5 years with runners taking a 50% claiming tag drop; hung wide in local bow, has a right to be on the muscle with the blinks today; dam just one for 16; 4 of 5 sibs won including stakes placed Peachy Kiss, who took 8 of 29, banked nearly $140K; the drop may wake her up.
Katey Pie
She may have been intimidated by the fence in last; stakes winning 13 for 41 dam banked over $650K, won both starts at 2; 5 of 6 siblings won including SP 8 for 37 racer and near $200K earner Peachy Kiss; rider has been value as his average win payoff has been over $35.
Note show horse in last was nearly 6 clear; dam lost only start; 2 of 3 siblings won; top kin Jilly From Philly took 5 of 29, banked over $100K; rates long look in all the slots.
Oh My Enberg
See Gin Jan Lizzie for sire stats; SP 2 for 11 dam earned nearly $125K; all 4 siblings won; stakes winning top kin Miles Rules took 3 of 5, was never out of the money, banked nearly $160K; note no published drills in July.
Warren's Off Duty
Walked out of the gate when an ice cube on the tote; SP 2 for 12 dam earned almost $45K; lone half sis to race Warren's Judy took 2 of 9, banked nearly $35K; needs a turn around.
Rich in Tradition
The 2013 debut was solid but she has not been able to match that Beyer; backers can point to the fact that top kin Trilliant banked $115K; overdue.
Precious Best
Never rasied a gallop; 1 for 4 dam won at 2; several multiple race siblings in the family including speedball, Grade 1 winner and over $700K earner Bob Black Jack; the blood is interesting.
