Closer Looks: Del Mar August 11, 2013

DRF Plus Preview

Race 1

Father Pabst
Reunites with the win rider for the lowest-claiming price of his career; lone victory was on dirt dueling for the front; he wants the lead today in a race with Faster Action and Always the Same the pace figures hot here; needed last start off the nearly year 1-year layoff exiting his lowest Beyer speed figure since May, 2012, posting his worst-career finish(10th); know him early then hopes to hang on late.
Figures to save ground stalking Father Pabst and the other speed; those tactics however did not produce a strong effort in last when no match at DMR for Bev N Bud who follows him here; since claimed from the Headley barn is 4-0-0-0 with a lot to prove off the DMR-synthetic 4-0-0-0 line.
Faster Action
30%-winning trainer 1st-time out with newly-acquired runners and 36% when going to Bejarano; both wins right on the lead; was out-dueled on dirt in last a race he needed off the 8-week absence; has been away 6 weeks for this but has worked like he is going to be tough to catch here.
Marine Fog
Always like a rider staying for the horse even though a barn change occurred off the claim; his last win picture was 16 races ago January, 2012, in a GG-synthetic 6F allowance rallying from 6th; was claimed off a near-miss finish at longer when closing well; was nosed by the 3-back winner who repeated in a PLN-5K-claimer with a 77 Beyer.
Always the Same
Both wins on the lead on dirt; he will have to beat Faster Action to the front for this; ralllied in last at shorter but clearly his game is racing right on the engine; mild worktab for an 0-for-23 layoff trainer since 2012; will be taking a wait and see approach.
So Far So Fast
Has not traveled this far since a November runner-up alw. finish; has also won going longer than 6F; quick from the gate but has won most of his races sitting just off the speed from 2nd; away 9 weeks for a 10%-winning fresh trainer for his 1st synthetic-surface start; wish the DMR workout for this sparkled more; the runner-up finisher from last won next out in a SRP $6,250 claimer with a 64 Beyer.
Bev N Bud
Multiple-win rider is on Marine Fog today; horse for the course is 3-for-3 in DMR-synthetic exactas; wokeup over the track in last when rallying well at longer; his DMR win was also at longer than today's event so getting up in time is the main concern; the 3-back winner repeated with an 87 Beyer taking a 40K claimer then made it 3 in a row in an optional claimer drilling a 95 speed figure.
Best Beyer and 2 of 3 wins on turf but has not raced on that surface since August, 2011; is back in just 18 days after a dull Del Mar effort facing similar rivals making him an outsider vs. these; last win was a late kick on dirt the 10-0-0-4 synthetic-surface record is not easy to take.
Has not raced this far since December when finishing last on turf; the 0-for-8 with 1 exacta record on synthetic surfaces is not very appealing; he makes his 1st DMR start marooned wide breaking from the far outside; wants to be forwardly placed but like 2-back loss vs. Always the Same figures to be a pace presence for part.

Race 2

Magic Channel
Son of top turf influence English Channel made his first start in America a winning one in his latest outing, but this does look like a tougher group that he's meeting up with, and he loses the services of Leparoux to Horizon Sky.
Horizon Sky (IRE)
Although Maldonado might have opted to pilot Los Bambinos in here, this gelding still looks like one of the stronger options to consider, and he gets a rider switch to a jockey that is best known for the work he does over turf; at the very least, he figures to be a tough one to keep out of the mix.
Democrat Duck
Respect the fact that he ran well in a couple of starts over turf at Santa Anita earlier in the year, but a little bit concerned by what he shown us in his two most recent races, and it looks like his connections are hoping that a drop in class can help.
Meringue Pie (GB)
This is an outfit that has shown the ability to step one up after a claim, but it does appear that they will need to have this gelding ready for a career best effort if he's to get the better of this field.
Los Bambinos
He's an interesting player in here when seeing what he did in his one turf attempt, a race that saw him earn a career best Beyer Speed Figure, and the runner up from that race won his next start at Pln on 6/27 going 1 1/16m vs. starter alw. rivals with an 84 Beyer; Maldonado has won with 10 of 36 (28%) mounts for this barn in 2013.
Dirty Swagg
He's stakes placed racing over the synthetic surface at BHP, but that level of performance hasn't been common for him, and his overall form hasn't been strong enough to help give him the look of a contender against these.
Although he finished in a dead heat with today's rival Magic Channel in his latest start, feel that this gelding showed up with a better effort in a race that was kind to closers; however, he might be in for another tussle on the fornt end with Meringue Pie.
One Firm Cat
He was stakes placed racing over dirt as a 2-year-old and he's shown enough in his eight turf attempts to merit his share of consideration in this spot, like to see Bejarano aboard and he was up for a solid runner-up finish two starts ago.

Race 3

Regally Soul
Ships back down here for his return from the break after offering little on the Golden Gate lawn; gelding has been working well at Hollywood and he owns some numbers that fit in here; maybe for a share.
Chicago Hero
Didn't have much to offer in his local return last time, but it was just his second start since last year and he has a right to be better with it behind him; gelding worked well last weekend for this and he was quite good a couple of times over the track last summer; expecting a better effort agaisnt this bunch.
Market Portfolio
Sire gets 14% first out winners from his offspring and the SP dam won 5 times while banking 261K; 5 of her 6 sibs to race are winners including Contemplated, a SP statebred whose debut score was one of 4 total sprint wins for her; works are solid for a barn that fires first time out; needn't be too much to have a say in the outcome here.
Ice Cream Truck
Failed to factor in any of his 3 tries and now he'll return from nearly 5 months on the shelf; gelding has been working well at Hollywood for this and the barn does do a nice job with its absentees; lone synthetic number puts him in the mix with these.
Slight Edge
Ran ok at this trip in his first start 28 months and understandably took a step back in his subsequent try; gelding gets a new pilot and boasts a sharp local 5/8s drill for his second local spin and may be ready to move forward some at what figures to be another big price.
California Grey
Drops a bit off his career best Beyer run in his Hollywood finale; gray did show improved lick in that one, but still only beat 2 rivals home and will need to continue improving in order to have a say in the outcome here; prefer others.
Valid But True
Gets off the fence after showing solid early foot off the break in just his second career start; gelding should be tighter with that try behind him and he's returned to twice work sharply over this oval; with a clean break he's capable of lasting a lot longer this time.
St. Valentino
Hood comes off this 7 year old who did little in his first start in a year and a half last time; he's worked a couple of times since the return try and maybe he's better with it behind him, but it wouldn't be a surprise if he needed another one.
Divine Notion
Beaten chalk in his first start of the year ran into another subsequent repeater in that heat; gelding should move forward with the effort behind him and he has been on the track several times in the interim; contender.
Spotted Owl
Addition of Lasix didn't do much for this guy and now he'll get shades while dropping in company; he's worked well here since his last and maybe he appreciates the softer group in this spot; found trouble in each of his starts but could prove more of a threat with a clean run.
Goes first time for a new, low percentage outfit after fading to finish behind one of the guys he'll catch again in this spot; gelding worked well late last month and maybe the new pilot helps get him going, but he'll need to offer serious improvement to get involved in the outcome in this spot.
Patriotic Lion
Professional maiden has certainly had his share of chances and he again showed sharp lick before bowing out of it late in his local debut; cut back plays to his favor and his speed does figure to have him involved from the bell; he clearly owns the best numbers of the bunch and he worked earlier in the week like he's ready to bounce back, but we're at the point of it being enough already with the teases; trying to beat him on the win end.
Heza Great Friend
AE makes his debut with a couple of solid local drills on his worktab; sire gets better than 14% first out winners from his offspring and the juvenile SW dam won first time out prior to dropping SW and 192K earner Unstoppable; worth a good look if he draws in.
Proud Step
Ruidoso shipper is entered to get back in with maidens while making his local debut; AE worked well here last weekend and he will get a weight break with the triple bug named; low percentage outfit in his corner has us looking at others to fill the money slots.

Race 4

Inside Scoop
Moderate work tab for this daughter of Cherokee Run who won the Breeders' Cup Sprint and 1.53 million (his progeny have scored in 56 out of 639 debuts); the dam went zero for 3; winning siblings include 504K earner Clearly a Queen.
Nero's Pleasure
Steady a.m. drills for this lass whose sire won the Dubai World Cup and 7.7 million; descendants of Pleasantly Perfect have won 25 out of 174 initial starts; the dam won 6 of 53 and 71K; sib to G1 winner Burning Roma who amassed 1.5 million.
Two solid efforts thus far but they are spaced a year apart; her sire won multiple G2s and 663K while the dam won 2 of 21 and 101K; sib to 43K bankroller Bestocats; obvious true contender but a shorter price today.
Not My Tap
Commendable try in late June despite failing to break straight and true; her sire won a G1 and 557K; the dam won 5 of 23 and 166K; among the winning siblings is 181K bankroller Mayakoba; looks like a cozy fit against these.
Elusive Luci
New face was sired by multiple G3 winner Elusive Quality who captured 413K and whose descendants are 91 for 586 as far as winning their first test; the dam went zero for 9; sib to 213K earner Stormy Lucy.
Sun Kiss
Prompted the pace a bit in her turf debut but main track racing is her game; turned in a solid placing 2 races back but that event featured some soft early fractions; will have to upgrade significantly in order to run these down.
Switched Up
See Nero's Pleasure, above, for same sire information; her dam won 9 of 19 and 399K; winning siblings include G1 type Switch who netted 1.4 million; note steady improvement to the set of workouts at five-eighths.
Love Love Me Do
Progeny of Birdstone, who won multiple G1s and 1.57 million, have won approximately 10 percent of their debuts; the dam went zero for 6 lifetime; among the winning siblings is 22K earner Granfield Belle.
Rockabye Lady
Opened up quickly in her maiden voyage last month before fading in mid-stretch; her sire won multiple G1s and 1.87 million; the dam went 6 for 17 earning 140K; sib to 95K bankroller Nextquestor; do not overlook.
Involved in a demanding pace battle in her first turf test last time out; her sire won multiple G2s and 548K; the dam won 3 of 9 and 59K; sib to 61K earner Woodman's Lass; has enough experience to be a major contender today.
My Looloo
Closed with a rush to capture the place despite a horrendous beginning last season; her sire won at the G2 level capturing 475K; the dam won her only attempt and 16K; there are no winning siblings to report; note sharp work on the morning of 7/29.
Newcomer's sire was unraced but offspring of Game Plan have won 38 out of 309 initial starts; the dam did not compete; there are no winning siblings to report; certainly did upgrade in the latest half-mile drill.
The Magic Stone
Adds blinkers after that ineffective first run behind Fanticola; her prolific sire won 1 of 2 and 33K while the dam won 1 of 11 and 29K; sib to 237K earner Street Lite; will offer good betting value if escaping AE list.
Passionate Diva
Crossed the pond earlier this year and turned in a fair pacesetting try going long recently; veteran trainer/jockey team at the helm makes her an interesting item on the turnback; worth some follow-up if failing to get to the gate today.

Race 5

No Jet Lag
This gelding has a nice pedigree for turf and it looks like he did some fine work racing overseas as a 2-year-old; obviously his first two starts as a 3-year-old raise some concerns, but he's still an interesting player while making his first start in America for a barn that has been doing well with their imports.
Little Jerry
This colt needs to bounce back from a performance that was below par for him in order to contend, but he's run some nice races in his career, and he's met some tough competition along the way; not going to count him out of it with Smith taking over.
Tiz Fitting
A case can be made for this stakes place colt being better off racing over dirt than he is over turf and he will need to show more than he has in his three turf attempts to get the better of this field; prefer to lean toward others.
Meydan Magic
Stakes placed gelding has looked good in his three starts routing over turf and he ran well in his latest outing before being placed first by way of disqualification; lightly raced runner is by a strong turf sire and he's still eligible to have more to show us at this stage of his career.
Tebows Big Play
There is some concern when seeing that he had to be pulled up in his latest start but have to respect what he did in his first two turf attempts, including a stakes placing two races ago; Bejarano has won with 37 of 87 (43%) mounts for this barn in 2013.
Sire wins with approximately 10% of his turf starters and this is the first foal from an unraced dam; one of two signed on in here for the Hollendorfer barn and it looks like Bejarano decided to go with the other one.
Tree of Life
He's a stakes winner over dirt, and when seeing what he did in his one start over turf against graded stakes competition, it's probably a good idea to give him another chance to see what he can do racing over grass; Maldonado has won with 8 of 27 (30%) mounts for this barn in 2013.
Three of his five starts over turf have been quality ones and this colt is a 1/2 to multiple G1 winner overseas Good Ba Ba (16-50, $7.4 million); he was a sharp winner in breaking his maiden in his latest start after a layoff, and like the idea of stretching him out in distance for this.
Under Review
His two starts over turf have been respectable performances and he finished right behind today's rival Tree of Life in the G3 Generous at BHP in his latest turf start; it looks like the screws were tightened in his latest workout and Leparoux has won with 4 of 10 mounts for this barn at the current meeting.
This One's for Mel
He might have to be careful to avoid an early pace dispute after breaking from an outside post, but have to respect the way that his form has improved since moving into this barn, and Gomez has won with 13 of 43 (30%) mounts for this outfit in 2013.

Race 6

Uncharted Course
Colt could be more on the muscle with the blinks this time; show horse in last won at this level next out and the winner repeated in the Grade 2 Best Pal; dam won 4 times in minor leagues, didn't go at 2; several winners in tree, 2 won at 2; may improve.
American Pride
Over 3 clear in a fine local effort; dam won debut at 2 for first of 2 scores; lone half sis won once long as older horse; the one to deny.
Wisdom of Crowds
In tight, has shot to show more speed with the shades; dam 0 for 6; all 4 siblings won; all tried at 2 to no avail, one banked over $100K; may need more experience.
New Order
Henny Hughes about 14% with juvenile firsters in a 130-runner sample; sire took debut at 2, won a couple of G1s; 2 for 13 dam earned over $50K, didn't race at 2; lone half sis to race won thrice as older horse; he looks fit enough.
Dance With Fate
It could be a new ballgame if he breaks this time; dam won once short as older horse; 2 of 3 sibs won; top kin Vegas Wedding won debut at 2, banked $175K; Bejarano strings along.
Southern Freedom
Like the way he finished up and now he gets an extra furlong to get there; stakes placed dam lost 5 times; lone half bro to race Reconstruction won at 2, took a stakes, earned over $100K; chances enhanced if a duel develops.
Cautious Giant
Giant's Causeway about 10% with juvenile firsters in a 267-runner sample; sire won juvenile debut by 7 and took a Group 1 at 2; 2 for 14 dam earned over $100K, didn't go at 2; this is her first to roll; renewed zest in the drill on the 3rd.
Even Echo
Street Hero 3 for 20 with juvenile debuters; sire took a Grade 1, earned over $400K; dam took 2 routes, lost once at 2; 2 sibs a combined 0 for 10; no local spins.
Flat Gone
Flatter about 10% with juvenile firsters in a 193-runner sample; SP sire didn t run at 2, was best going long; SP dam won at 2, cashed 13 times, banked about $185K; 3 of 4 sibs won; 2 raced at 2 to no avail; could need one.
Bond Holder
O'Neill thought enough of him to start him out in the stakes but would love to see move speed from him; SW dam earned nearly $350K, was 3rd in best juvenile moment; both sibs won in minor leagues, one took debut at 2; look for him in the late stages.
Latent Heat 9 for 63 with juvenile firsters; sire was 2nd in only juvenile out, took a G1; SP dam took bow at 2, lost next 6; all 4 sibs won, 2 at 2, one banked over $100K; forced to steady in last, don't dismiss.

Race 7

Anita Marie
Claimed by an 0-for-16 Del Mar barn who is 0-for the last-12 first-off-the-buy; rated effectively from off the pace in last in her 1st DMR-synthetic surafce attempt while winning her other 2 races right on the lead; she wants to be forwardly placed; has won at longer than this so the added half furlong does not hurt the repeat chances; defeated the 3-back runner-up finisher who posted a 64 Beyer speed figure in her next-out GG-starter alw. win.
Explosive Argument
Couple of firsts today like racing on a synthetic surface and in for a claiming price; all off the 59-day layoff for an 0-for-47 synthetic trainer since 2012; rated well in the dirt-sprint wins and figures to race from mid-pack here saving ground; will be taking a wait and see approach.
Daddy's Song
Speedster's trainer is 0-for the last-17 with synthetic-surface starters and this is her 1st synthetic start; worked well at DMR for this; both wins on the lead and figures to be playing catch me if you can here cuttng back to her shortest-distance test since the January win on a wet-main track.
Both wins were rrating just off the speed which seems like a favorable and likely trip for this; 5 weeks since tiring at today's distance vs. Sultry Season and the runner-up finisher who Beyered 73 in a next-out DMR-40K-claiming win; needs to show better stamina in deep stretch to turn the tables.
Magestic Stinger
Claimed for this off a 5%-win barn and into a trainer's hands 26% first off the claim since 2012; horse for the course finished 2nd in her career debut last summer at Del Mar; rated well in her October dirt win but has just one exacta finish in her next 6 races; exits her lowest 2013 Beyer which is the main concern.
Bottle Blonde (GB)
Bullet workout 6 days ago for this suggests she is ready to explode for the new barn; stalker hopes for better off the 5-week break when fading; 26%-win trainer 1st off the claim adds to the appeal but exits her 2nd lowest USA Beyer when no match finishing last vs. Sultry Season.
Song of a Witch
Been an all-or-nothing during career with 2 off-the-pace dirt wins and 8 off-the-board finishes including 2 duds on synthetic surfaces including latest over the track; beat the 2-back runner-up finisher on dirt who Beyered 60 in her next-out HST-25K-claiming win.
Sultry Season
Upset victory looks better since beating the runner-up finisher who Beyered 73 in a next-out 40K-claiming victory; win rider from last lands on Magestic Stinger for this; 2-time win rider Talamo lands on On Golden Pawn; wish the workouts for this were snappier for her 1st DMR attempt.
Lady Rosamond
Reunites with the 2-time win jockey who was the rider for her only other synthetic-surface start a BHP graduation at today's distance producing a field-best Beyer; won her other race sitting just off the speed and stalking the pace which seems like her best chance of scoring again today; DMR-bullet workout off the career-low Beyer suggests a big wakeup call is on the way.
Irish Presence
1st time with blinkers on today and 1st time for a new trainer after 4 straight starts landing off-the-board; late runner was at her best on GG synthetic while primed for this on turf; with the new hood expecting her to race a lot closer to the front for this but must show more.
Lady Katfish
0-for-19 DMR barn claimed fer from a high-win-percentage trainer which is not a good win angle; raced on the lead in her Del Mar 2012 career debut before fading at shorter; her career-low Beyer was on the DMR synthetic; view s a pace presence for part.
On Golden Pawn
Dueled into defeat in last; her lone win was on the lead and hopes to outbreak a field top heavy with other frontrunners; the DMR workout for this does not add to the appeal; tough call after beating 1 runner from her last 2 races combined..

Race 8

My Gi Gi
Certainly done well enough to indicate she fits with these; that being said, she's also finished behind 'Shamrock and 'Flirtatious a number of times so while she's not out of her element could it be this level is a smidge beyond her?; quite possibly, but she's got some versatility and 3 nice works since her last indicate she's feeling pretty darn good.
Tiz Flirtatious
Superb 2nd in the G1 Gamely at BHP May 27, particularly when you note the gal who beat her (Marketing Mix) came back to drill males and may be the best turf distaffer in the land; no way to knock a gal who's been 1-2 in 9 of 10 starts, the only time she wasn't (ran 3rd) came on dirt a year and a half ago; ample versatility to give her rider options; figures plenty tough yet again.
Lady of Shamrock
Went East to face some of the best there in the G2 New York and was by no means disgraced; girl packs a real punch and note her career-best Beyer (94) and her last win came on this course a year ago; Sadler adds blinkers but you don't figure to get a surprise style-wise - she figures to sit and blast home and the small field means fewer traffic issues, which has to help.
Customer Base
Continues her good work; that being said, she probably doesn't measure up to her stablemate Marketing Mix and it would likely take that gal's performance level to win this; ast least comes here sharp as a tack with versatility to give rider Smith all sorts of options but with just the one Beyer cracking the 90 barrier she likely needs to run a race today that she hasn't run yet in order to win this; of course, that's not out of reach by any means, is it?
Journaliste (ARG)
Lots of good work in her native Argentina in 2012; came here last fall but things haven't gone so well in 3 starts in the U.S.; in her defense, there have been gaps in her schedule before and since all 3 starts and that's the case again today; moves back to turf, which may be a help, but it's also a brand new, longer distance so that's a hurdle, not to mention she's yet to show she's acclimated to her new surroundings.

Race 9

Joe Carl
Hot claim box item must be respected; over 3 clear in last, pro has a penchant for finding the sire and he's been in the money half the time here; a little closer to Would You in last but he has to find a way to turn the tables on that foe among others.
Majestic Moment
Colt raced himself into shape before getting the diploma and lack of speed can make him his own worst enemy; in tough in the stakes last time but he really has not been close since overcoming trouble and beating 5 for the last win; 6/13 win repeated in a $62.5K optional with a 100 Beyer; the hotter the pace the better.
Malibu Affair
Far from disgraced in the race here last year and he has been pretty solid since; 4/14 place horse took a $34K allowance at Canterbury next out with an 85 Beyer; winner of last repeated in a $25K optional at Lone Star, then ran out of the money; respect interloper.
Tiz Dynamic
Wonder if that SA finale just knocked the starch out of him?; he had to take the time off and has not been all that sharp since; proven at the trip, he has the two races to draw from now and he has more speed than he just showed; could easily be enticed into gimmick action.
God Of War (BRZ)
Proven locally and for the price, if you figure he just needed the last then you can make a case for a move forward; the 2/16 winner took a $12K optional at AQU, then was out of the money thrice; needs a rebound run.
Mr. Candy Bar
Proven vs. tougher, but he is far from a win machine; the race over the surface can't hurt but note runner has never been in the money on the synthetic; has some things to iron out.
Would You
Solid middle move in last to swoop and go 5th to first; 3 clear two back, runner worked well here a week ago and he has put in 3 tough races in a row; there seems to be enough pace in here to help the cause; respect.
Maybe Tuesday
Gelding makes a pivotal barn move today; like the series of local drills and the move a week ago suggests he likes this surface; pro has some back class to draw from and the 5/25 show horse took a $50K optional next out with an 84 Beyer; note Mullins 26% off the claim in the last year of so.
Aloha Mr. Hand
Life and death for the last win in a much softer field; never in the money at the trip and that is a concern; he could have sulked after he steadied in last, but yet put his head down and was getting to the winner; may need easier to shine.
Reach a Decision
Three regressions since winning for Sadler; all the wins have come on turf as he makes his synthetic debut; last two drills were eye catching and backers have to hope the drop shakes him up; value should be there.
Romeo Royale
The win here last year may have zapped him; only one poor race after last year and the mirror races this year are not very good; limited speed could put him behind the 8 ball turning for home; note wraps on for last pair; try to get a good look at him on the track.
Mr. Make Believe
Carefully placed off the claim; nothing wrong with hitting the exacta in 8 of 18 and his tactical speed will give him first run on the deep closers; runner he dead heated with on 5/11 repeated in a $25K claimer with a 85 Beyer; fresh and dangerous.
