Champion Shanghai Bobby sires first foal

Champion Shanghai Bobby sired his first foal on Jan. 16 when Opulence, an unraced daughter of champion Rags to Riches, produced a dark bay colt at Coolmore’s Creekview Farm in Paris, Ky.

The colt is the second foal out of Opulence, a Giant’s Causeway mare, who is booked to Coolmore stallion Declaration of War for the 2015 breeding season. The mare’s first foal was a colt from the first crop of Stay Thirsty, also a Coolmore sire.

Shanghai Bobby, a 5-year-old son of Harlan’s Holiday, stands at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky., for an advertised fee of $15,000.

“We are delighted with Shanghai Bobby’s first foal,” Ashford Stud manager Dermot Ryan said. “He’s a correct colt with plenty of substance and is a strong color just like his sire.”

Shanghai Bobby won six of eight starts during his on-track career for earnings of $1,875,000. He was named champion 2-year-old male of 2012 with a campaign that included wins in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Champagne Stakes, as well as the Grade 2 Hopeful Stakes.

Bred in Kentucky by Stonehaven Steadings, Shanghai Bobby is the first foal out of the stakes-winning Orientate mare Steelin’. He is from the family of Grade 1 winner City Band, Grade 2 winner Freedom Child, and Grade 3 winner American Lion.
