Castellano breaks Dominguez's earnings record

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Javier Castellano established a North American single season earnings record by a jockey after winning Friday’s third race at Gulfstream Park aboard I Ain’t Gonna Lie. Castellano, 36, eclipsed the old mark of $25,634,852 established by Ramon Dominguez in 2012.

“I’m very proud and thankful to break the record and be on the same level with such a classy guy as Ramon Dominguez,” said Castellano shortly after his record-breaking ride. “You work all year long for a moment like this.”

Castellano thanked all the owners and trainers who gave him the opportunity to ride their horses during the course of the year while also singling out his agent, Matt Muzikar, for special recognition.

“I especially want to thank my agent,” said Castellano. “He handled my business so well and put in a lot of effort to get me on the right horses all year long.”

Castellano, who won riding titles this year at Gulfstream, Saratoga, and both Belmont Park meetings, said it was difficult to single out any one highlight during his record-setting season.

“Right now I have so many horses going through my head, it’s hard to single any one out,” said Castellano. “I’m just blessed to be able to be leading rider in New York, where the purses are so good, and here at Gulfstream against all these other great jockeys in the winter. To be consistent, and the leading rider all year round, is very special to me and probably more impressive than breaking the record money wise.”

No disrespect, but he would not have won all that had Dominguez still been riding.

Congrats casty well deserved....if this guy doesn't win the eclipse award this year I just wouldn't know what to tell you about this game anymore last year rosie received more votes than him unreal just unreal and this is coming from a woman I'm all about girl power too but that was just unfair to him I mean for some reason he still flies under the radar but the die hard racing fans know his skills are up there with the best of them but lf leading the nation in wins and earnings isn't enough to get you an eclipse award I would just have to believe someone is eightballing him in the voting...but good luck and keep truckin javier and congrats on a new record

Congrats to Javier 1st and foremost. Ramon a bittersweet moment; I know the saddle still haunts you but unwise to consider a comeback in that you are now uninsurable and a paraplegic risk in the event of even a minor spill. This month Chris Antley has been ‘down’ 13yrs..RIP Antman one of the most talented….Now to Javier one of my favorites; perfection in the saddle, it’s like poetry in motion set to music. Aerodynamic, the balance, the whip switch, the art of becoming one with the horse. Something Ramon as good as he was never achieved, look at his mechanics in the saddle and you be the judge. If destiny is favorable the next 20 years WILL be dominated by Irad Ortiz jr with all due respect..

I like Castellano a lot, but he is not the best jock in the world and this statistic is simply about inflation. Can one imagine how much money would have been earned if they were at today's rates by the likes of Shoemaker, Day, Cordero, Pincay, Arcaro among many, many others. Nonetheless, congrats to him to him for achieving something that is not really comparable over time to others.
