Calder: Smash invades for dirt try in Carry Back

Email

MIAMI - Smash has earned high marks in each of his last two starts at Hollywood Park but will be making his first try over dirt in the Carry Back on Saturday at Calder. The West Coast invader, trained by Bob Baffert will also face the disadvantage of breaking from the rail in a compact lineup of six 3-year-olds signed on for the Grade 2 dash on the afternoon's Summit of Speed card.

The locally based Indiano will be heavily favored to give trainer Marty Wolfson his second straight Carry Back victory and third in the last four years. Wolfson won the race in 2008 with Golden Spikes and again last summer with Coffee Boy.

Indiano rallied from just off the pace to an easy 4 1/4-length victory in the Unbridled Stakes in his local debut on June 11. He also finished second behind Travelin Man during the spring in Gulfstream Park's Grade 2 Swale.

Cal Nation, an impressive allowance winner in his last start at Belmont, the undefeated Bulaga, Close It Out and Silver Cloud complete the field.
