PEDIGREE ANALYSIS
By Dan Illman
Sire:
Distorted Humor won a pair of Grade 2 stakes at seven furlongs, reached 118 on the Beyer Speed Figure scale, and prevailed at distances ranging from six furlongs to one mile.
At stud, he has been a revelation, siring Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Funny Cide, and Belmont Stakes winner Drosselmeyer.
Distorted Humor also 'nicks' fabulously with A.P. Indy mares. Any Given Saturday, the winner of the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational at nine furlongs, and Endorsement, the hero of the nine-furlong, Grade 3 Sunland Derby, are both out of mares by A.P. Indy.
Dam:
Supercharger has already made her mark on the breed as she produced last year's Kentucky Derby winner, Super Saver. Supercharger won three of eight races at distances ranging from six furlongs to a mile, and is a full sister to Grade 1 sprint winner Girolamo (Vosburgh Stakes at six furlongs, has also won at a mile), Grade 3 route winner Accelerator (Pilgrim Stakes at 1 1/16 miles, also won at 1 1/2 miles on turf), and Grade 2 winner Daydreaming (Top Flight Handicap at one mile, won at nine furlongs). She is also a half-sister to stakes-winning router Harborage (Victoria Park Stakes at nine furlongs).
The second dam, Get Lucky (by Mr. Prospector), won the Grade 3 Affectionately Handicap at 1 1/16 miles, and is a full sister to Travers Stakes and Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Rhythm.
Supercharger's third dam, Dance Number (by Northern Dancer), won the Grade 1 Beldame at 1 1/4 miles, and is a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Private Account. Fourth dam Numbered Account (by Buckpasser) was champion juvenile filly of 1971. The family dates all the way back to blue-hen mare extraordinaire La Troienne, and is one of the most prolific in the stud book.
Outlook:
Brethren is a half-brother to a Kentucky Derby winner by a stallion that has sired the winners of all three Triple Crown events. He will always be one of the best-bred horses in any race he enters and seems well-prepared to last 1 1/4 miles.
Best Bets
DRINK OR SINK went too fast on the lead last time before fading on the turf at Tampa, and should be less aggressive here with blinkers off. Olguin was aboard for his good fall races on the Poly, and should have him closing at a square price in his second start of the year. GOOD BETTER BEST finished up the track behind two next-out winners when he tried the dirt for the first time March 30 at Gulfstream. He hasn't faced this easy a field in a while, and is no stranger to filling out the exactor.
