Beulah Park: Rider misjudges finish line on 23-1 shot

John McDulin|Jan 18, 2012

GROVE CITY, Ohio – Veteran jockey Alberto Pusac has an appointment to meet with the Beulah Park board of stewards Friday morning following an incident in the fourth race on Wednesday.

Pusac was aboard 23-1 Sterling Emblem in the fourth race, a $2,500 claiming event going a mile and 70 yards. Pusac had a five-length lead in upper stretch but stopped riding while appearing to misjudge the finish line between the eighth pole and sixteenth pole. When two horses began to pass Sterling Emblem, Pusac sat back down on his mount and urged her the rest of the way home, finishing third, beaten 3 1/4 lengths.

Immediately following the race, the stewards posted the inquiry sign to review the matter. The stewards then called the jockeys’ room and asked that Pusac appear before them Friday, as Beulah Park is dark on Thursday.
