Baze rides four winners, including Allaboutaction, on opening day

Russell Baze, who has won 13 straight jockey titles and 53 overall at Golden Gate Fields, took a quick lead in the standings with four victories Saturday, opening day of the track’s 75th anniversary season.

Baze’s most significant victory came with the highly touted 2-year-old Allaboutaction in a one-mile allowance that serves as a prep for the $100,000 California Derby on Jan. 16.

Allaboutaction, who won his debut by nine lengths, ran fourth as the 3-5 favorite in the one-mile Gold Rush in his second start after acting up in the paddock and running rank early in his stakes debut.

He stalked Risk Reward early but was much more relaxed than in his stakes try. He topped two of the runners that beat him in the Gold Rush, defeating Gold Rush show horse Marqula by 1 3/4 lengths with Gold Rush runner-up Algenon another 1 1/4 lengths back.

The winning time was 1:37.97, and Allaboutaction, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer and owned by Hollendorfer, Mark DeDomenico, and George Todaro, paid $5.

Baze, who had seven mounts, also won with his first mount aboard Hurry Hank ($4.80), third on Seeking Asylum ($4.80), and seventh on Life Is a Joy ($5.40).
