2016 Eclipse Awards: WinStar Farm

Kenny Troutt’s WinStar Farm has accomplished more in the past 16 years than operations several times older achieve over the span of their existence.

Last year was one of the best yet for the Versailles, Ky., farm, highlighted by a pair of Breeders’ Cup winners and the most wins and earnings by a North American breeder.

WinStar Farm finished the year with 238 winners and combined earnings of $10,503,297 in 2016, making it the only operation to surpass the $10 million threshold.

Leading the way was homebred Tourist, who won the Grade 1 Fourstardave Handicap en route to a win in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. New Money Honey won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, wrapping up a campaign that also included a victory in the Grade 3 Miss Grillo Stakes.

Other notable WinStar-breds to race in 2016 included Grade 1 winner Constellation; Grade 2 winners Good Samaritan, Stanford, Calgary Cat, and Nonna Mela; and Grade 3 winners Speightster, Fair Point, American Patriot, Flexibility, and Cyrus Alexander.

WinStar Farm is slated to stand 22 stallions at its Kentucky base in 2017, and many of its standout runners were bred in support of its roster. Homebreds Tourist and Speightster are among the three new stallions to join the WinStar stud barn this year, and both are themselves sired by WinStar residents.

WinStar Farm was previously a finalist for outstanding breeder in 2008. The operation earned the Eclipse Award for outstanding owner in 2010.
