2013 Eclipse Awards: Ken and Sarah Ramsey

Owners and breeders Ken and Sarah Ramsey are no strangers to being recognized at the highest levels of the sport, having received the Eclipse Award as outstanding owner in both 2004 and 2011. The couple has never enjoyed a year like 2013, however. The Ramseys in 2013 amassed more than $12 million in earnings as owners, $5 million ahead of second-place Midwest Thoroughbreds.

Perhaps even more impressive, they held a slim lead over Frank Stronach’s North American empire in earnings as breeders, with more than $12.1 million. These earnings are derived overwhelmingly from the progeny of the Ramseys’ powerhouse stallion, leading 2013 North American general sire Kitten’s Joy, validating Ken Ramsey’s decision to breed a large number of his own mares to the son of El Prado early in his stud career.

The Ramseys continued their dominance of race meets at Keeneland and Churchill Downs in their home state of Kentucky, winning both the spring and fall meet titles at Keeneland and the summer, early fall, and late fall meets at Churchill. They also finished atop the owners’ standings during Gulfstream Park’s winter 2012-2013 meeting and claimed their third owners’ title at Saratoga with a record 22 wins.

Highlights were numerous during 2013, and Ken Ramsey’s ear-to-ear ebullient smile was a regular occurrence in winner’s circle photos at tracks across the country. Nothing topped Aug. 17, when the long-married couple celebrated a trio of Grade 1 victories in less than two hours as Admiral Kitten won the Secretariat Stakes, Big Blue Kitten took the Sword Dancer Invitational, and Real Solution was awarded first in the Arlington Million via disqualification. All three runners are Ramsey Farm homebreds by Kitten’s Joy.

How fortunate I am to have claimed a daughter of Kitten's Joy @ Hawthorne in 2011. Be-cause of an injury I bred her and she produced a wonderful filly on 5-5-13. My Kitten's Joy mare is pregnant again (by the same son of champion Mineshaft). Can't wait to race this mare's offsprings. The Ramseys breeding and racing operations are a credit to the sport. I hope some of their Kitten's Joy success rubs off on my small stable.

It was truly a very dominant year for them....The red R in the red circle on the silks were so dominant... whenever you saw it you had to take a double look at the horse.....
