The Kentucky derby will be a hard fought race if the track conditions are dry and normal. More then likely the race in the front after about a mile into the race will be between hansen and take charge indy. These two horses can easily go the distance but they will have to hold on during the final furlong at Dullanhan and Union Rags and creative cause. On the other hand, if the race track is wet, just play hansen all the way. He will probably win the race by five lenghts or more in a wet track agains this horses. This could be a similar race to the one went Point given took charge of teh race few years ago from the middle of teh race to the end to win easily. Hansen is capable to do just that. He is being losing a couple of races but he fought hard all the way down to the wire, indicating that he still a great contender. Especially because the closes time to a record of the track at 1 and 1/8 of a mile was performed by dullanhan and hansen. They were only 1.5 seconds of the record of the track, while all other horses the best they can do is 2 seconds or worse of the track record at teh mile and 1/8. This means that they must really run the final furlong without any issues in order to have a change at catching hansen and dullanhan. My pick to win the Derby is Hansen first, Dullanham second, Union Rags third, Creative Cause four, and Bodemeister fifth. The rest of the horses are still unproven horses because neither one of them hav e run their races closed to a record pace for their distances. So they have a lot of work to do. For example, Gemologist and Alpha were 3.5 seconds of the the track record. I will have another was 2.6 second of the track record. Daddy long legs was 2.05 seconds of the track record. So looking at teh odds for any horse coming from behind to win this years kentucky derby is too hard considering that there will be twenty horses on the race and many issues going on for all the horses trying to come from behind. I think that Hansen wil steal this race from the beggining to the end.
Bolos Mansur 22 days ago
news flash thor, point given didn't win the derby, manarchos did..
Michael Bockhorst 21 days ago
It's my opinion that Hansen can't get the distance wet or dry. He's a great horse up to a mile. A wet track might help to extend his distance a little but I feel like 12 furlongs is just too much. I'll be shocked if he's in the money.
Joan Karg 24 days ago
If the sprinters set the pace this race could go to a long shot. A couple have turned the 1/4 in 22+,,,pretty quick

Hey everyone, love to read all your comments concerning the Derby NOW READ THIS Alpha boys and girls , the horses name is Alpha Ramon , love you as a money jock, but people, when you get injured like Ramon did with his shoulder, you are NOT 100 percent rideing horses for a while, Ramon was hurting riding Alpha in the Wood , no doubt about it. Great, let Ramon ride Hansen, you will give Alpha a better shot winning with Alan Garcia if his connections decide to use him, which personally its a no brainer. Take all day long, Alpha all with All Alpha at a price. That little horse is getting no respect, none. ALPHA PROSPECTIVE\ DADDY KNOWS BEST SABERCAT and if it is an off track, throw UNION RAGS in the mix and your life will change $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Bodemeister is the only horse with 3 triple digit beyers. Only 3 other horses have 1 triple digit beyer. I think you guys are missing something here. Throw on Smith, who always gives his horse a chance and keeps them in the clear...watch out!

Let's look at the plain old facts first. Gemologist is unbeaten Gemologist has the pedigree to run all day Gemologist is owned by winstar farms AKA borel in 2010 Derby and LS in the breeders cup classic, Gemologist is trained by the student of the great DWayne Lukas, Tod Pletcher knows a thing or two about winning big races, and any race. When he beat alfa in the wood I may look like he was tiring but JR knew where he was in the race and what he did not have to do (Which was empty the tank to prove this horses capabilities, it was the wood follks not the DERBY!) This year will mirror the Derby past of Ferdinand , bold arangement, and broad brush. HERE IT IS FOLKS, Gemologist Daddy long legs Dullahan Take this from a guy who knows a thing or two about horses from an owners stand point, a handicappers standpoint and an astute horse fan.
Roman Fedyna 29 days ago
GEMOLIGIST'S PACE NUMBERS ARE MARGINAL. WILL FINISH IN LOWER TIER AGAINST THIS "FAST" BUNCH. CALIFORNIA CONNECTION OF CREATIVE CAUSE AND I'LL HAVE ANOTHER IS YOUR EXACTA. DULLAHAN AND HANSON FILL OUT THE TRI AND SUPER. THROW IN UNION RAGS AND YOU HAVE THE HI-FIVE. CAN'T WAIT TO CASH THAT IRS TICKET.
randy boley 28 days ago
It would definately be an i.r.s ticket if those horses got to the winners circle. heres the call== its hansen and bodemeister neck and neck with Take charge indy close up till the streatch. then it's bodemeister winning by 4. with dullahan finishing second and i'll have another closing for 3rd. hansen hangs on for 4th. u-can-bet-on-it.... ARKY....
Thor Gonzalez 28 days ago
Gemologist unbeaten races have been againt lower class horses. not real runners like hansen, creative cause, I will have another, Bodemeister, and few other horses in this race. Furthermore, Alpha almost passing by in the final stride of the wood memorial as well as it is time was three second slower than record time for the track. He will not even place between the best five horses when the races is over. If you know about handicapping a little bit. Then do the following in order to find the best three horses of the race. Look at the charts of each and every pre-race for each and eveey horse running in the Kentucky Derby, then look at the track record for the distance the horses were running on that day oon any of their grade 1,2,3 races. See how many seconds behind the track record for the distance the winning horse placed. You will see that only the horses that ran against hansen and I will have another did the best time againts the track record time for the distance. these makes Hansen and I will have another the best bets for the kentucky derby. One horse like hansen can take this race from start to fininsh because the pace have to slow down while the only two horses that were very closed to the track record and I consider them a challenge agains Hansen are I will have another and Creative Cause. Not for nothing hansen have the most earnings. He always fight to the end and he doesn't look tired even in the runs that he loss. Hansen to win

Master 22 days ago
Gemologist has no shot. All his numbers aren't soft, they are awful. The only horse of any consequence he has beaten, Alpha, would have went right by had the race been a few yards longer and Alpha had a bad trip to boot.. D. Wayne Lukas gave up his status as great decades ago. Lukas fell off when Pletcher left, and while I like Pletcher, his Derby record is not at all good. For all your alleged gravitas in the horse racing world, your look at FACTS seems to only massage info into facts to support your feelings. Your attachment to a marginal at best contender and the argument you use to support it, suggests your choice is emotional, not based on facts.

P.S. Please bet lots on the likes of Gemologist, it will help the pays for the real players.

Get Bejerano off Liaison, the horse hates the jockey not the track! If that happens, Liaison could be sitting on a BIG one! Has the mileage and the talent. Ready to explode. Union Rags works in 58 flat@ Churchill, week of Derby! That's my one way exacta.Get Bejerano off the horse!!!

Hansen will win the Kentucky Derby if teh track is wet. However, if the race track is dry or firm, then I will have another, Creative Cause, union rags, and Dosemeister will have some catching to do in the final furlong. It is my opinion that Hansen is in great shape and the jockey has been the reason for its prior very closed losses. However, if the jockey Ramon Dominguez get its horse some easy fractions at teh beggining of the race, this horse will win by five lenghts or more in the final strech run. Hansen has the habit to win big races and this one will not be much different.

Eric 3 months ago
I am truly hoping that Trinniberg runs in The Derby. Not because I think he can win, but he will make for a honest pace and clear out all of this Cheap Speed.
Chris Jones 3 months ago
I agree, Eric. I think Trinniberg has no chance, but if he runs he may compromise Hansen, Take Charge Indy & Bodemeister. That eliminates 3 of the top 10 candidates right there.
Michael Schmidt 3 months ago
Interesting stuff.
Maynard 3 months ago
Eric. I agree but I think the cheap speed always takes itself out around the quarter pole anyway in the Derby. It's too far for any horse except one like a Spend a Buck or a War Chant which each got loose on a lonely lead. Bodemeister, Take Charge Indy and Trinneberg have a 3 and Hansen a 3.5. They are the highest in the race except for Dullahan at 4.2. Did you watch poor Dullahan after the finish? It looked like he was choking. Kent had to pull him up. I read a blog that said he was fighting to go on. I don't think so. What do any of you make of it? Doubt dosage if you dare. I don't.
Robin Cardoza 3 months ago
It was probably Kent being Kent (over-dramatic). If you ever see a horse that was eased or pulled up and Kent was the last rider make sure you place a wager. Most of the time its a sure bet!
Maynard 3 months ago
I just remembered it wasn't War Chant, it was War Emblem that won wire to wire. Winning Colors also made just ahead of Easy Goer and Risen Star. The thing that works for speed horses is if they aren't challenged. With Hansen, Bodemeister, I'll Have Another and now Triniberg, none of them will get an easy lead and be able to slow down the pace. They'll go too fast and will have to have tremendous stamina to go on. Unless one of them is a Secretariat, which we would have known by now, they will be passed by stalkers and closers. That means horses like Creative Cause and Union Rags and Dullahan if he's ok. Gemologist has already won a couple of races at Churchill so he'll like the surface. Can he get a mile and a quarter? His sire Tiznow could and he's out of a Mr. Prospector mare. He was born on January 28 so he's one of the oldest horses in the race. He paddles one of his front legs out which might interfere with his stamina. He's unbeaten but the only really good horse he's beaten is Alpha in the Wood where Alpha cut himself when he got cut off on the first turn. He has an infection but his trainer claims a second antibiotic has cleared it up.

Every year the Derby, and for that matter the TC, is getting more and more pathetic. The horses continue to get slower and less consistant as each year goes by. There isn't a horse in this year that could even remotely make a run at the TC. If it wasn't for the "graded earnings" requirement, I would fully expect a maiden to win the Derby one of the next few years. 95% of these horses will never even run 10-12 lifeltime races. So for Panama to say "amazing TC this year" is rediculous. These horses just take turns beating each other like a bunch of $5k claimers...only the $5k claimers at least run for more than a year and a half in their lifetime. Enjoy another pathetic, falling TV ratings WALK for the roses.
Nick Gunritz 4 months ago
Really? Have you even watched the races this year? Who keeps beating each other? Maybe you're watching last years races.
Mark Kuzelka 4 months ago
So far 28 preps, 24 different winners...need I say more?
Nick Gunritz 3 months ago
Yeah because that's what tells the story. Certainly you must notice that the same horses aren't entered in each race? The only major upset was Hero of Order. I guess you could say I'll Have Another's first win, but he followed that up witg a win in tge sa derby. All the preps have been very formful for the most part. By the way I feel soery for your bank account if you actually bet.
Mark Kuzelka 3 months ago
Thanks for the concern (D)Nick. I'll tell you what. You can have all 20 horses entered, I'll drain my bank accounts and I'll wager you that three different horses win in the TC races. There will be no TC winner nor will there be a horse that even wins two of three. You got the guts?
Mark Kuzelka 3 months ago
BTW, I hit the Tri and the exacta last year...my bank acount is just fine. I've been betting the horses for 41 years. I have personally witnessed the decline of the industry and the equine athletes. You can argue with me because that is your right, but history has shown that I am correct. In 15 years there will be no more than 10-12 tracks left running in the country. RIP horse racing.
Anonymous 3 months ago
I agree. "Numbers don´t lie" is a fallacy. Numbers lie all the time; The fact that there have been that many winners, doesn't mean that it is a bad year. In 1996 then according to your logic we should have had a terrible year. Grindstone won the Derby, Louis Quattorze the Preakness, Editor´s Note the Belmont; let's not forget the "other bad horses" in these races: Skip Away, Unbridled's Song, My Flag and Will's Way. Truly a pathetic bunch.
robert 3 months ago
I think he's referring to the 3 races in the TC that will be amazing. I also think they will be. Just because there might not be a horse that makes a run at winning all three of them, doesn't mean its pathetic. Sure it may get more people to turn the tv on and watch the race. 28 preps 24 different winners thats perfect. Gives the horse player a better opportunity than watching horses at 1/5 and 2/5 win every race. I guess I don't need a TC winner to watch and enjoy the races. I wouldn't say the horses are slower fastest bluegrass since 1998 and fastest Ark derby since 2003 and fastest santa anita derby since....Point Given.
Nick Gunritz 3 months ago
Nostalgia runs rampant in every sport. However, to say this group of three year olds is not good is just flat wrong. This is one the deepest groups in years.
Panama Stallion 4 months ago
Why would you take Secret Circle out? If he wins the Arkansas Derby he will have earned his entry into the KD the RIGHT way. Although I still believe that Bodemeister will romp in the Arkansas Derby, if SC runs a really good race and distance doesn´t show to be his limitations then I believe he should compete in the Derby. I don´t think that Baffert would be so stone-faced so as to run Liaison in the KD after the horse´s recent races. Drill should be out, as well as Hero Of Order. I don´t think Trinniberg (will wait for the Preakness) and On Fire Baby would run, but Mark Valeski would and so would the winner of the Blue Grass, if it is someone other than Hansen and the first 2 places of the Arkansas Derby (Bodemeister who would jump over El Padrino and someone else) The only way El Padrino makes it in is if he runs, and wins, in the Lexington Stakes, which I believe would be a wiser move. That way it will give EP an opportunity to show that his Florida Derby Run may have been just a bounce from the Risen Star and he deserves to Run for the Roses. I personally think that a wiser move would be to skip the KD and head to Maryland for the Preakness. Even with just the one horse, Gemologist, Pletcher has a pretty good chance to win the Derby. His Wood Memorial race was excellent and it may just be him and Alpha battling the entire Triple Crown (very unlikely with UR, IHA, Hansen and Bodemeister in the Derby, Hansen, Bodemeister and Trinniberg in the Preakness and UR, Mark Valeski , IHA and CC in the Belmont) Man, this looks like an amazing TC this year!!! Can´t wait for 2012 to make-up for 2011.
Mine thatbird 4 months ago
It's hard to believe that Pletcher might not get a horse into this years KD. The additions of DLL and Wrote have El Padrino in a rough spot. Even after you take out 5 horses (Drill, OFB, SC, Hero of Order, and one other) you still have to figure the Wood gets 2 horses in, the Illinois Derby, SA Derby, Arkansas Derby all get 1 a piece. From my eye it looks like Pletcher's Derby hopes are riding on Gemologist.
Douglas 3 months ago
Good, Now if Baffert wouldn't have so many horses I think it would benefit the race a whole lot. A trainer having to many horses in the race waters down the the field. You can't tell me for a minute that they don't gang up on competing horses from other trainers even at the stakes level. It's not fair to the bettors or the owners of the horses.

I watched and was disappointed with Street Life's race. I had high hpoes for him off his 2 prior wins, but after closing ground to at least seem like he was in the race he just seemed to level off. I'm hoping Najjaar doesn't do the same this week, but you can't fall 20+ lengths out of it and have a realistic chance. At least he'll have a faster pace in the Ark Derby.
