Some BC Morning Line Surprises

Awesome Gem (Marathon) and Morning Line (Dirt Mile) went from obscure longshots to unexpected morning-line favorites when they were entered in their second-preference races Tuesday afternoon.

Awesome Gem's connections had announced several days ago they were leaning towards the Marathon instead of the Dirt Mile, but he was still being offered at 12-1 by the English bookmaking firm William Hill. When the 7-year-old was formally entered in the Marathon today, though, Churchill Downs's Mike Battaglia installed him as the 7-2 favorite on the official morning line.

As for Morning Line -- the horse who won the Pennsylvania Derby last time out -- he went from being a no-hoper in the Classic to another surprising Battaglia choice as the 7-2 favorite in the Dirt Mile over 4-1 Crown of Thorns. William Hill, in a release about an hour after the official draw concluded at Churchill Downs, changed its prices on 18 horses and quoted Morning Line in the Dirt Mile at 7-1.

Listed below are the final fields in post-position order. I've carried over the oddslines from yesterday's chart -- comparing the pre-entries lines made a week ago by DRF's Brad Free (Friday races) and Mike Watchmaker (Saturday) with the Hill prices being offered yesterday. Significant differences of opinion remain highlighted in yellow. I've now added two new columns: The revised Hill prices, with the Monday-to-Tuesday changes highlighted in green -- and Battaglia's official morning lines, with meaningful discrepancies from the previous prices highlighted in blue.

PS--Thanks for your backslaps on last night's glorious baseball results. It took every one of my 54 years, but I can now say that I have lived to see a man walk on the moon AND the Giants win the World Series.

I think Zenyatta is a fantastic horse, and my heart would love to see her win, but for value I will be forced to bet against her. The splits are going to be faster this time around, she is going to be 15 lengths out of it, while she loops around in the back.,I don't think she will close in time on these Big Boys.

If Zenyatta fires her usual race she will run over this field, how can anyone mention Etched,Haynesfield in the same breath? Zenyatta is a superstar running against mere mortals. Quality Road is brilliant, but only under ideal circumstances like chasing cheap speed, and Looking at Lucky is a nice 3yo who beat a terrible 3yo crop.

Hi Steve : Just a quick question. AQU had a stakes race listed for today the "Love Sign". as of 10:30 am NYRA has yet to post any entries for this race and only has 8 races listed in its entries ( NYRA usually runs 9 races). Is this normal or is it because its opening day? The last race of an eight-race Aqueduct card is carded for 3:48 p.m. because the first BC race is at 4:10. I assume the Love Sign didn't fill. -SC]

You know why Zenyatta is so famous besides her tremendous wins? Because Jerry and Ann Moss kept her running and we got used to her and loved her... there are so many horses that are running in the Breeder's Cup that will be sold after the race.. It is the greedy trainers and owners that don't let the public love the horse and they are gone someplace else. That is why horse racing is failing. In all other sports we see the same football players, car racers, hockey racers, tennis players and so on.. What happens with racing is a crime and that is why the handle is down.... there are always new horses and no one we can go and see time and time again.... In Zenyatta we have had a couple of years watching her... and that is why she brings so many to the tracks she races at.... The Mosses are the best of the best...

I hope you are not going to comment on the Jockey Bet again this year and ruin the odds.

Still, more evidence that ‘reason’ has completely checked out when it comes to discussing Zenyatta with Z-natics. If a horseplayer merely expresses a handicapping opinion that favors a BCC entrant other than Zenyatta…he’s “bashing Zenyatta.” If person, quite reasonably, expresses the opinion that a horse should, at the very least, be required to regularly compete at the level that it is purported to reign over…they’re “bashing Zenyatta.” If a racing fan doesn’t fall down in fits of convulsions and start speaking in tongues when in the presence of Zenyatta…you guessed it…you’re “bashing Zenyatta.” I hope the big mare actually does it on Saturday, erstwhile, we can expect a rash of mass suicides at simulcast facilities all over California.
