Switch won her first Grade 1 stakes and third stakes of the year in Sunday's Grade 1 La Brea Stakes, zipping seven furlongs in 1:20.33.
The track record for a conventional dirt surface is 1:20, held by Spectacular Bid in 1980. Santa Anita installed a sand-and-clay surface in November, ending a three-year troubled run with synthetic tracks. Earlier on the program, The Factor broke a 21-year-old record, running six furlongs in 1:06.98.
Switch ($4.40) was well-placed throughout under jockey Joel Rosario, stalking pacesetter Tornado Betty through early fractions of 22 and 44.31 seconds. Racing on the rail, Switch took the lead in early stretch and won by four lengths over Always a Princess. Shotgun Gulch, a 60-1 outsider, finished third.

READ THE SIGNS had a useful tightener first time out, finishing evenly in a sprint and winding up just three lengths behind the runner-up, while earning this group's best last-out Beyer; stretches out from favorable post and drops in with New York-bred fillies and mares that are combined 0 for 90. MOMMY'S DEAREST was clear thru 6fs in slow 1:17, led to deep stretch before finally being run down by Tropical Jetset, who left maiden ranks on the 22nd try; cutting back 70 yards can only help.
