Santa Anita: $10,000 claimer runs 1:34

The $10,000 claimer Self Insured led throughout Thursday's fifth race, finishing a mile in 1:34. The time was .60 of a second slower than Ruhlmann's 1989 track record of 1:33.40.

Self Insured, ridden by Joel Rosario, set a pace of 22.92 and 45.48 seconds. He ran six furlongs in 1:09.06 and finished 8 1-4 lengths in front of Skellytown, the 3-1 second choice. Self Insured was favored and returned $5.20.

Self Insured, a 7-year-old gelding, has run primarily in sprints in the last year. Owned by La Canada Stables and trained by Jack Carava, Self Insured has won 5 of 39 starts.

The track has played fast all day. In the first race, maiden claimers ran six furlongs in 1:08.88. In the fourth race, an optional claimer, the two-time stakes winner Mythical Power ran seven furlongs in 1:20.12, missing Twirling Candy's month-old track record by .42 of a second.
