The Return of Paynter
When PAYNTER breaks from the gate in Friday's seventh race at Betfair Hollywood Park, he will complete one of the most improbable comebacks since Lazarus.
Two days after winning the Grade 1 Haskell Invitaional at Monmouth last July, Paynter developed an illness and was sent to a veterinary clinic in New Jersey. Less than a month later, he suffered from colitis and showed signs of the dreaded hoof disease laminitis. If that wasn't enough, Paynter underwent surgery in October to remove an abscess from a pouch in his large intestine.
Many horses don't recover from these ailments. If, in the unlikely event, they do recuperate fully, they certainly don't race again.
Especially impreccably-bred Grade 1 winners like Paynter that are worth a pretty penny at stud.
Credit goes to Zayat Stables for giving the popular colt another day on the track, and if he's the same horse that finished second in last year's Belmont Stakes, the others are running for second money.
If you believe that Paynter can still run, the seventh race at Betfair Hollywood on Friday isn't much of a betting event. He's simply not worth the risk to take an odds-on price. The race is more of a spectacle as fans have been fascinated by this horse's courageous convalescence and unlikely return.
Win or lose, Paynter doesn't owe anything to anyone, but one can't help rooting for the Awesome Again colt to return to the winner's circle.
*Paynter's stablemate, FAST BULLET, lived up to his name with a 110-Beyer victory in the Grade 2 True North Handicap on the Belmont Stakes undercard. Unraced since last year due to foot ailments and illness, Fast Bullet was simply too fast for his opponents. He scooted to an uncontested lead and dug in gamely to meet the challenge of his in-form stablemate, JUSTIN PHILLIP. The main concern with Fast Bullet is soundness. He's only started a handful of times in his career but, when he's right, he's one of the fastest sprinters in the land.
*Although LET EM SHINE was defeated in the Grade 2 Woody Stephens Stakes, the fleet 3-year-old certainly ran well. The California invader cleared to the front from his outside post position, but faced pace pressure all the way around. He rebuffed the strong challenge from ZEE BROS turning for home, but was sufficienly weakened by the early battle and was susceptible to the quality closers. He deserves another chance, especially when turning back to six furlongs. Another horse to watch out of the Woody Stephens is DECLAN'S WARRIOR, who ran into major traffic trouble in the final furlong.
*MIZDIRECTION beat the boys in last year's Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, and GOOD DEED may attempt to make it two in a row for the ladies in this year's edition. The 4-year-old filly, trained by Steve Margolis, is a multiple stakes-winner on dirt, but she's been unstoppable from two starts on the turf at Churchill Downs this year. She won both five-furlong events by a combined 9 1/4 lengths and received a 104 Beyer for her speedy try on June 7.

Let's go with the eighth race at Betfair Hollywood on Friday.
PAST PERFORMANCES ARE AVAILABLE AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS BLOG POST.
Remember that you have a mythical $100 with which to wager on the race, and the entrant with the highest money total will receive a "Monthly Enhanced 60-Card Past Performance Plan."
Anyone going over the $100 limit will be disqualified.
Please post your plays and analysis to the blog.
PLEASE GIVE YOUR NAME OR BLOG MONIKER AT THE END OF THE HG PLAY AND/OR ANALYSIS.
Please separate the play from the analysis and label the play "HG" with the program numbers (instead of the horse's name) for easier scoring.
In the event of a tie, the earliest post gets first preference. One entry per person please.
I reserve the right to approve or deny any entries.
I know that there is a time issue for some of you, but let's remember why we began the HandiGambling races in the first place. The goal was to share ideas on why we like these horses, and why we're betting them the way we are. I'm not asking for a novel, but if you could spare a sentence or two outlining your handicapping angles, and thought processes about wagering, it would be appreciated.
***FROM SCOREKEEPER PENN NATIONAL RICK***
I read some entries on here and there are some people who put their heart out on their picks(such as DavidM9999) and give you great analysis on who they like and why and then there are others who elect not to give any reasoning behind their entries. The rule I will implement EFFECTIVE 3/1/13 will be... any entry without ANY analysis will be ignored. We are not asking you to put out a novel, but again a sentence or two. Also, I will put communication out when Dan puts out new blogs.
My intent is not to be jerk on this, but what's fair is fair. I'm not taking away from this week or past winners regarding all of this, but we do need to make the change.
If you have any questions/concerns...please send an email to FORMBLOG@DRF.COM and it will get forwarded to me.
REMEMBER, IF YOU ARE DECLARED THE WINNER OF THE HANDIGAMBLING EXERCISE; PLEASE CONTACT FORMBLOG@DRF.COM WITH YOUR DRF LOGIN AND PASSWORD IN ORDER TO ACCESS YOUR PRIZE PACKAGE.
ALSO, IF THE WINNER WOULD LIKE TO SELECT THE FOLLOWING WEEK'S RACE, PLEASE CONTACT FORMBLOG@DRF.COM NO LATE THAN THE FOLLOWING WEDNESDAY MORNING (A FRIDAY RACE IS MOST IDEAL).
Best of luck to all.

HG: $51 win on 2 $24 tri 2/9/8 $25 tri 2/8/9 Four scratches leaves a valueless small field. But I’ll take a stab with the remaining longshot. Thanks, Ed Kay
BHPHG: Hello all! Two horse race here in my view. You have to like the 4 on the drop down and the one finishes second more often than not. Therefore the simple bet is as floows; $100 Exacta 4-1. Good luck al!
BHP HG due to scratches: Should have checked ahead of time! Whole scope of race has changed. Due to scratches, I think the 7 can definitely steal this race stretching out, should be zero pressure up front now and this one was really cooking two back. $60 win #7 and $20 exacta box 7-4
BHP HG: Love the look of the 4 on the drop as long as she stays closer to the pace than she did when moving up in class. Like the 10 next off a little freshening and class drop as well, should be in the clear for the stretch run. Looks like they found the right level for the 8 and the 9 looks live with RB in the saddle of a claim and a nice worktab. $80 Exacta 4-10, $10 Trifecta 4/10/8,9 Great choice of a race, so many could win this! All other gambling just pales in comparison to thoroughbred racing :)

Annie ...look at some of the MKB's going for BIG $$$ this weekend. HG Betfair 8. 1= probably gets lead and gets caught. 2=not much of late. 4=post beneficial and dropping the pick. 6= 9 time winner vs. less. 7=declining beyers 8=will be closing. 9=16 for 26 in money. $76.00 win #4. $2.00 exacta box 4-1-8. $2.00 trifecta box 4-1-8. good luck to all.
$100 exacta, 8-9 / straight-up of course.
BHP HG Seems like every BHP HG race has multiple scratches. I wish I could wait until post time but I have to do it early because of work constraints. I will let my earlier pick ride and just spot the field because of the scratches. Most likely looking at 0-85 in HG.
HG Revision per scratches. $25.00 Tri's 2 - ( 8-9 ) and 8 - ( 2-9 ) Tommy2Tone
