Oak Tree: PVal wins, then unseated

Email

Jockey Patrick Valenzuela won his second race of the evening in Thursday's seventh race on Big Shot Syd but was unseated when the 4-year-old gelding was being galloped back to the winner's circle. Valenzuela landed heavily on the left side of his lower back and hip, stayed on the ground for a moment and then walked to the nearby winner's circle.

Valenzuela was not aboard Big Shot Syd for the winner's circle photo, choosing to stand with trainer Janet Armstrong and others.

Big Shot Syd ($6.20) was the "longest" price in a field of three. The optional claimer was scheduled for 1 1-8 miles on the turf course and drew six entrants, but was scratched down to three runners when the race was moved to the main track because of wet weather earlier in the week. There was no place or show wagering.

Big Shot Syd stalked Oak Kye Why for the first six furlongs, took over the lead when the pacesetter drifted to the outside in early stretch and easily outfinished California Soldier.

Valenzuela also won the sixth race aboard the maiden claimer Swiss G's ($5.80).
