Among the goodies heaped upon Laffit Pincay Jr. when he broke Bill Shoemaker's record for the most winners in December of 1999 was the renaming of a real City of Inglewood street in his honor. It runs along the north border of the former Hollywood Park near what used to be the stable entrance. Soon this will be the only reminder that anything was ever there at all.

The two tough old trucks hauling dangerously unstable dynamite in the great William Friedkin movie “Sorcerer” are named Sorcerer and Lazaro. Sorcerer is the one that explodes when a tire blows on a mountain road. Lazaro is the one that survives, after going through all kinds of hell, although it does finally run out of gas.

Gary Stevens popped the top off a cold bottle of Heineken with the butt end of a Bic lighter and handed it to a visitor. He could afford to feel generous after winning the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic aboard Mucho Macho Man just 24 hours after taking the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff with Beholder. “I’ve had 153 text messages and seems like almost as many phone calls,” Stevens said. “Stay here. Drink this. I’m gonna go take a shower.”
