Belmont ParK: Chavez says he's okay

Jockey Jorge Chavez said though he felt a little lower back pain, X-rays taken on his back at  North Shore University Hospital were clean and that he plans to ride Thursday at Belmont Park. Chavez is listed on two mounts on Thursday's card.

``X-rays came out clean, I'm waiting to be released,'' Chavez said Wednesday shortly after 5:15 p.m. from North Shore. ``I'll be ready to ride tomorrow.''

Chavez was taken to North Shore after his mount, Pea Stone, suffered a fatal injury to her left foreleg at the quarter pole of Wednesday's fifth race. Chavez hit the ground hard and lay nearly motionless for several minutes before being removed from the track on a stretcher. Chavez, 48, said he had the wind knocked out of him and was complaining of lower back pain. In 2003, Chavez suffered a broken back in a spill during the Florida Derby.

Pea Stone broke her left front leg and had to be euthanized.
