2010 Horse of the Year ZENYATTA - a photographic tribute
Email
Congratulations to 2010 Horse of the Year ZENYATTA and her wonderfully generous connections!
The images below were taken by Alysse Jacobs, Tom Keyser, Justin N. Lane, Tod Marks and Barbara Livingston.

John Shirreffs with his two 2009 Breeders' Cup winners (Zenyatta, Breeders' Cup Classic, and Life is Sweet, Breeders' Cup Distaff winner)

Thank you for all of the priceless memories!
I especially love the pictures of Z with Mario. It seems there is such a special, close relationship there, and they just curve around each other.
What great photos!!! And yes, a book of them sounds like a wonderful idea too. Then followups added to the collection, each year she has a foal. : )
What a beautiful collection of photos of Zenny. I love the different shots from the races to her baths.
I would love to purchase a book with all of these shots. The photos with Mario and Ann Moss show the depth of their love for this great horse. Thank you for sharing.
Barbara
Once again, another lovely pictorial. & this time for Zenyatta. My favorite pictures are those of Mario and her. Enough said. You capture that 'link' so beautifully. Thank you !
Hi Barbara,
A Zenyatta book with splendid photos sounds like such an interesting and Zentastic idea. A real natural.
And a trip to the Zenyatta Zone is sometimes zany and always Zensational.
No longer any need to fret on zoom or doom. Just pleasantly dwell on all things Z.
In book form – zippity-do-da!
What is happening in that beautiful head?
I wish I knew, I wish I knew:)
Zenyatta, how beautiful you are, you can see your spunk and spirit in your big brow eyes. You are truley a champion! The photo't Brabara took are marvelous and a tribute to your life that all can share. Thank you for all the joy you have brought to so many followers.
Wow! What a great way of reliving the life of Zenyatta. Too many outstanding photographs to name just one that I enjoyed viewing...several times I might add. It would be something special if you could add a book, such as this, to your successful series of many that you have blessed us with thus far. Zenayatta was such an appropriate name for her. What other name could have possibly been as electrifying in capturing her spirit? Who else but you, could have given us the true spirit of Zenyatta? Kudos to your staff as well. Now on to the baby shots of both girls. :>) They will be a hoot!
Love the “dappled out” shot,
Melancholy over the last, “The End”.
On to a new chapter Z.
Also love her catching that palm frond -- and making no mistake about it -- as well as the flashes of fire while being exercised by Steve: white-rimmed eye, open mouth, swishy tail. She's not Ghandhi, after all. Or maybe she is: just with all the grit of any real saint.
Thank you, Barbara for these beautiful photos. Yes, you have captured the very essence of Zenyatta. Please publish a book with all of these pictures. Thanks again for sharing them with us.
Loved it, She was the BEST!!! Would love to see a book of these
What a marvelous collection and recollection of the memorable career and newly retired life of the great Zenyatta. She took us all on a ride of a lifetime and has endeared herself to thousands of fans all over the world. Such heart and affection in such a marvelous animal. She is an inspiration and a great ambassador for the sport. It was the perfect storm when she was purchased for the Moss's and entrusted to the genius of John Shirreffs. Patience and caring certainly paid off for all her team and all of us adoring fans. God has blessed us all. Long live "The Queen" and may she pass on her legacy to generations to come.
Beautiful pictures. I agree that Barbara should assemble some into a book. I'm sure many would purchaes it. Love the eye shots.
Barbara, THANK YOU for these AWESOME photos :) I'm so happy & grateful Queen Zenyatta received the HOY Award she so righty deserved and a special Thank You to Penny Chenery for awarding Zenyatta with the "Voice of the People" Award. Congratulations to Team Zenyatta and America's Queen :)
To DFR Staff,
This is a wonderful photo tribute to the Queen of Horseracing!! Thank you very much for these beautifull pictures. Fondly, OraJean
These are some wonderful shots of a beautiful creature, you are very talented, Thank You for sharing!!!!
Thank you for the photographic record of this gallant racemare's life thus far. I will be heading to Lanes End in late spring to bid her "hello" and "good-bye".
Zenyatta's kind comes along only once in a great while. I want to take some time now, after the Eclipse Awards, to honor her accomplishments and marvel at her ability to make us love her. I'm a "hard-core" horseplayer, but I'm also the guy who stood up in the middle of the Santa Anita clubhouse seats and applauded the chalky Buckpasser when he won the San Fernando Stakes many years ago even though I think I bet a horse named Duel to beat him. I'm certain everyone thought I was nuts, but I couldn't help admiring greatness.
For the same reason, I am grateful to have been around to witness the efforts of the amazing Rachel Alexandra and the "hard as hickory" Blame.
Thank you again for the wonderful photos.
only Barbara :} thanks for the dancing shots!!!
Methinks Ms. Livingston should consider assembling a collection of certain select photos of Queen Z for a book a la "Old Friends" for timely publication. I, personally, would purchase several copies as gifts for family members who share my adoration for her.

Thank You Ms. Livingston Although I enjoy all of your Photos these are especially wonderful !!!!
The photos in this magnificent collection are absolutely breathtaking. It would be impossible to choose just one photo as as a favorite (though I have to agree with everyone who mentioned the one where Zenyatta is rubbing her head on Mario's arm. That look in her eyes says it all.) Many of the Zenyatta fans will be returning to look at all of these photos again and again. Thank you so much for sharing them with us.
Wow! This wonderful portfolio of our beloved Zenyatta captures the Joy of her!!! She is pure Joy and has brought so much joy to her fans. She is truly a wonder. i just don't have enough superlatives. I am just in love with her. Thank you Barbara.
Love this!!! Thank you for the beautiful photos of the Queen.
So many terrific shots of her bending that lovely llama-neck fully around, to catch up on the news in the next state, behind her...
The reflection of her visiting family in her eye, at Lane's End...Her crooning, "Mario, Mario" like a Tosca, serene...
And kickin' up her heels! Scattering the snow and earth beneath her hooves. Buck-buck and ("Did you get that?") BUCK! "I'm fancy free, and free for anything fancy..."
Thank you so much for bringing us into her realm!
Dear Barbara,
Your pictures are riveting, as bold as she is. What an eye you have! And she is a gorgeous girl in all settings.
Amazing talent you have. These are beautiful photos. Especially love the ones of her hooves, her and Mario, with the angle of her head peering over her side, her eyes. Love the ones of her romping in freedom in the snow, just being a horse. I too hope that you make photos available for purchase. Thank you for sharing. It means a great deal.
Barbara, super nice tribute to an amazing racehorse! Years ago you took some great photographs of my horse, Golden Act, during Belmont Stakes week, and I have several hanging up in my home and office. Keep up the good work!
Once in a lifetime animal. The HOTY trophy makes up for the way she was wronged last year.
Beautiful!! You capture the very essence of Zenyatta. The one with Mario shows how very much he means to her, and she to him! I also hope you will make a collection in book form. If not please make some of these available to those of us who have never been able to see Zenyatta in person and learned to love her through so many of your beautiful pictures, Thank you!!
Brings tears to my eyes. We were blessed to have seen such a horse. We love you Zenyatta!!!

Z really is a once in a lifetime race mare and I am so happy that she is, in fact, the 2010 Horse of the Year. Congratulations to all envolved and especially you, Barbara, for the visual treat on Z - the one and only. Thank you so much!

Barbara, Thank you soooo very much for sharing this tribute to Zenyatta. It is such a beautiful and endearing tribute
to a truley magnificent special miracle horse. Your photographs depict so many special moments that
she has had with soooo many people and horses. She is truely the peoples' horse and a true champion the likes of which
many of us will not see again. Thanks sooo very much for this collection of breathtaking photographs.
Thank You; worth 1,000s of words.
Great photos. That one of the close-up of Zenyatta's eye where you can see the reflection in it is absolutely spectacular!!
I prayed for her safety during races and I wanted her to win Horse of the Year so badly. I was thrilled to hear she had one. God really blessed us with a wonderful horse in Zenny. I wish I could see her face to face, but Barbara, with your wonderful photographs it is next to as good as getting to be there with her. Thank you for sharing these with her fans. God bless you for it. This is a wonderful gift.
Absolutely beautiful. I agree that a book is a must - your photos and the essays/columns of Steve Haskins of "The Blood Horse" would hold a place of honor on my bookshelf.
Barbara - thank you for such a wonderful array of beautiful photographs. You've captured every aspect, every nuance of Zenyatta's personality and magnificence. I have to say my favorite is her resting lovingly against Mario. She looks so content. Such a moment. And of course there are the photographs where she shows the great spirit of being just a horse as she runs and bucks up, so carefree. And when she peers deeply into the camera. And the tight shot of her looking back over her shoulder, just her eye appearing above her glistening coat. There are just too many - she has to be one of the most photogenic horses you've ever captured on film.
She's so incredible... she truly takes my breath away. I KNEW she'd win. Thank you for sharing these captured moments ...
She is the greatest. Love these photos
Loved all these photos! I had a smile on my face the entire time! Thank you all for the "eye candy." Zenyatta is the greatest and I hope she has a wonderful life as a broodmare. I especially liked the photo of her laying her head on Mario! You can't tell me this horse doesn't have feelings! I bow to you, Queen Z!
Barbara, these pictures are true portraits of greatness. I have to reiterate what everyone else is saying about a photo book - it would be glorious. Thanks again for all these wonderful views of Queen Z - she is truly in a class by herself, no doubt.
Thank you for these beautiful pictures! You have an amazing talent!
My favourite ones are pic. #1, then the one with Zenyatta and Life Is Sweet nose touching and the one where she rubs her head on Mario - awww!
I'm speechless! What breathtaking photographs...you have captured so many aspects of her personallity. I would love to have them grace my table to gaze upon her whenever I need to see beauty! Thank you Barbara, your photography is spectacular!
Thank you, Barbara. Your photos are wonderful. (especially love the one of her with Mario). She looks so happy and healthy.
Thank you so much, Barbara Livingston for capturing such precious moments.
What a brilliant career, deserving champion, Horse of the Year and ambassador for the sport...God speed great warrior....!!!
Herbie,
Come on lighten up. It's obvious that some who post are not knowledgeable when it comes to horses, thus their connection is different. It results in many humanizing their interpretation of Z's every move. Let's not forget that MANY of Z's fans fall into this category. This is not a bad thing, it has drawn many to horse racing that may not have otherwise. The Mosses and 55 were instrumental in making Z available to ALL and celebrating her beautiful personality and athleticism. So, please allow others to post without badgering them. Who cares, if it's not your truth or anyone else's for that matter. There is no harm with others expressing themselves...right or wrong. Congrats to Z and Team Z.
Her beauty, greatness & heart show thru in these photos, you did an amazing job in capturing that !
Zenyatta is magnificent!! She truly is the Queen. She looks happy playing in the snow at her new home. I will miss the thrill of seeing her run, but am happy for her as she starts the next chapter in her life!
I totally agree with Jennifer Snitko and anyone else who is begging for a book to be done. This is such a no-brainer. Publish it and we will come. I know there will probably be several books done on Queen Z in the near future, but your photography is the most outstanding and would be the book most wanted of Z. Please advise us all if this is in the works and we will be most grateful. Zenyatta reigns supreme and Barbara Livingston photography is royally superb!!! THANK YOU FOR ALL OF THE BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES YOU HAVE GIVEN TO ALL OF US OF OUR QUEEN ZENYATTA!
Thank you, Daily Racing Form and Barbara Livingston, for this magnificent collection.
Breathtaking! Thank you sooo much for sharing :)
Love the one of her and Mario "hugging"
No one can tell me that animals don't have
feelings. It's all there in her eyes.
these had me tearing up (again) for sure ... my favorites are the ones of Zenyatta bucking and jumping in her paddock at Lane's End. Thanks Barbara -- you're my favorite photographer!
Thank you for these wonderful shots. You have captured her essence for sure.
How wonderful to relive in photos all those wonderful moments! Thank you very much for sharing! She is really a special horse!
Wonderful! So very glad that she won! Thanks to the DRF for putting these up even though they didn't vote for her....
Barbara, what wonderful, beautiful, amazing, terrific, stunning, and majestic pictures and moments of Zenyatta you have taken. There needs to be a book printed of these pictures, so many people would buy it (but you know that). Thank you so much for sharing them, there great.
We can't get enough of that beautiful big body! More, more, more, please! What an athlete! When she's done having babies, or while she's having babies, could she please be trained for the dressage moves that come SO naturally to her?
These are SO BEAUTIFUL !!! Thank you so much !!! Long Live the Queen !!

Fabulous shots! You caught so many aspects of her personality. We are all so lucky to have seen this great horse run! She is so special with her racing record, and then, added to her beauty, intelligence and class - we have not seen one like her - ever! What a thrill.
Amazing, beautiful, majestic!, just like she is! A pure goddess. Would buy the book in a heartbeat. Thanks
Barbara:
Thank for the wonderful photo layouts of my two "favorite girls" who I love as though I owed them, namely, Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra. Two of the all-time greats. I was thrilled to learn last night that Queen Z won the Horse of the Year for 2010, an award that she so justly deserved. The greatest mare of all times!! Now Zenyatta and Rachel have both won the HOY. I could not be happier.
Aaron Detroit
It is wonderful news, she won!!
Obviously her new grooms in Kentucky don't know how to make her happy. Did you see how sore she felt when she was left to run around in the snow for the first video?
Now look at the pictures with her race groom visiting. Please keep them together, their understanding is palpable!
Isn't she lovely.
Oh Barbara! Thank you so much for sharing these beautiful moments of Zenyatta with her fans. Every time I see them it warms my heart!
Please, a book, please? I admire your photography more than anyone else's, and these photos are a compilation of of the best of the best moments in this great mare's life. Please, a book?
Wonderful news!
Do these pictures at the end mean that she is keeping her beloved groom from John's barn with her in Kentucky? I hope so!
That was terrific, Barbara. Thank you.
Barbara,
You have managed to capture so many different sides of Zenyatta's personality .
Thank you for your expertise. It is a fitting tribute to our 2010 Horse of the Year.
We will not see the likes of her again.
Thank you for this, Barbara. The photos are spectacular and I especially liked the several classic head shots (Z looking every bit like some of the great old -- painted -- portraits of the past!), the "texture" shots of mane, feet, tail and I really LOVE the one of Zenny rubbing up against Mario @ Lane's End, as well as the B&W close-up of the two of them. Just a lovely portfolio!!!!!
Awwww......Mario loves her so much - and it is soooo easy to see why!!!
Great photos!
thank-you so much ,,,for such beauty,of Zenyatta i will always cherish these pic's,,,,,,awesome is all i can think to say,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Stunning, beautiful, amazing pictures. Wow. Thank you so much for sharing these amazing photos and your talents with us. Zenyatta is the Queen!
Beautiful compilation....my favorite is Mario walking Zenyatta at Lane's End....He has a beautiful smile and Zenyatta has a look of pure love and hint of a tear or sadness....it is true unconditional love between them!
Yes Barbara, PLEASE do a book with these images!! It would retain a place of honor on my bookshelf next to Old Friends and More Old Friends.
Thank you so much for this lovely photo essay.
What wonderful pictures, thank you. We can only be thankful that this incredible mare came along in our lifetime and fantastic photographers like you were there to capture it for eternity for us and generations to come who will only hear of the great Queen Z! Coffee table book, indeed.

It was two weeks ago that SIZZLING GOLD sizzled over this very course, blazing to a highly rated win vs. open $25k claimers. She actually is dropping in class into this California-bred spot, and if she reproduces her most recent start, the 8-for-25 veteran can be gone again. If she tires, then TASTY TREAT or DARLING DODIE could be along in time. 'TREAT is getting better, with a good second-place finish at this level while lightly raced DARLING DODIE makes only her third start and has much potential. She can sit, and finish. So can ABELLA.
