TV Sports Director highlights Calder stake

MIAMI - T V Sports Director bounced back from the worst performance of his career to register perhaps his best effort yet, rallying to a 1-length victory over Tour of the Cat in Saturday's $50,000 Needles Stakes at Calder.

T V Sports Director finished seventh, beaten nearly 32 lengths, in the Unbridled Stakes on Aug. 19 when he returned to the main track for the first time in nearly five months. After that, trainer Reed Combest discovered the 3-year-old colt had an illness that was affecting his cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

First-starter tops Canadian juveniles

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - First-time starter Atlantic Fury upset 3-5 favorite El Soprano in Saturday's $250,000 Cup and Saucer Stakes for Canadian-bred 2-year-olds at Woodbine.

Atlantic Fury, the lone filly in the six-horse field, set slow fractions over soft ground in the 1 1/16-mile turf event while being pressed by Classic Case. El Soprano trailed early, but moved into a stalking position along the rail on the turn.

Scoop romps in slop in Indy Oaks

ANDERSON, Ind. - Scoop found the sloppy going to her liking Friday night at Hoosier Park and won the $205,800 Indiana Breeders' Cup Oaks by a comfortable three lengths.

Ridden by Robby Albarado, Scoop ($11) angled inside pacesetting favorite Caressing going to the far turn and drew clear turning into the quarter-mile stretch of this seven-eighths of a mile oval. Albarado was in cruise control through the lane, drawing off under only mild urging through the final eighth of a mile.

Flows Like Wine helps Lundy bid adieu

A 3-year-old filly, she faces eight rivals in the Columbus Day feature, the $50,000-added Silver Maiden Stakes, as Lundy's days as an Arlington-based trainer drift to an end.

Hoovergetthekeys faces older rivals

Carl Odegaard's Hoovergetthekeys will face older rivals for the first time here Monday in a strong mile allowance test. The special Columbus Day card will start at 12:45 p.m. with Hoovergetthekeys in the the seventh on an eight-race program.

Hoovergetthekeys returned to form last out, in a 1 1/16-mile race on the turf Sept. 10. He rated off the early pace, then unleashed a strong stretch run to defeat Sea to See and Sir Alfred.

El Cielo comes back a winner

ARCADIA, Calif. - El Cielo kept his backers in suspense before clinching his comeback victory in a $59,044 allowance race at Santa Anita on Friday.

Making his first start since February, a layoff caused by hind end problems, according to trainer Craig Dollase, El Cielo won his fourth consecutive appearance on Santa Anita's hillside turf course. The streak includes the 2000 Morvich Handicap, a Nov. 5 race on El Cielo's schedule.

Watch Bella Bellucci

ELMONT, N.Y. - When the gates opened for the fifth race at Belmont Park on Sept. 9, many of those who made Bella Bellucci the 1-2 favorite surely let out a groan. A debuting juvenile filly, she fell out of the gate under Mike Smith, spotting her seven rivals at least one length in the six-furlong race.

The groans quickly turned to glee, however, as Bella Bellucci, without any encouragement from Smith, moved into contention around the turn and eventually drew clear for a 5 3/4-length victory, while racing five wide the entire trip.

Joanies Bella looks best of Best

GROVE CITY, Ohio - The highlight of Beulah Park's fall meeting takes place in a special Monday-afternoon card of racing, when the track plays host to the 15th annual Best of Ohio Championships.

The Best of Ohio series consists of five races for Ohio-breds with purses totaling $375,000. The series rotates amongst Ohio's three Thoroughbred tracks - Thistledown, Beulah Park, and River Downs - on a yearly basis.

Siphonic, 'Sunshine' impressive

Siphonic hits the wire six lengths clear after leading 10 other 2-year-olds gate-to-wire in Saturday's Grade 2 Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Siphonic led every step of the way Saturday for a highly impressive victory in the Lane's End Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland, emerging as a top contender for the Oct. 27 Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

With Chris McCarron aboard, Siphonic drew off to win the Grade 2, $454,400 Breeders' Futurity by six lengths over Harlan's Holiday. Metatron finished third, another two lengths back in a field of 11 2-year-olds, while Kamsack, the 3-2 favorite, was never a threat, finishing seventh.
