Gulfstream barns to open early

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Gulfstream Park will open its barn area Oct. 22, two weeks earlier than usual, track president and general manager Scott Savin announced Friday.

The 2002 Gulfstream meet runs from Jan. 3 through April 24.

Savin said the decision was made to help horsemen who are forced to vacate their stalls at other tracks. This will allow them to come directly to Gulfstream instead of seeking temporary accommodations elsewhere.

Another trip for Stage Classic

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Stage Classic probably will be taking his show back on the road, this time to the British Columbia Derby Sept. 29.

"I've considered the McLaughlin," said Dave Cotey, trainer and co-owner of Stage Classic, a 3-year-old gelding who would have carried 117 pounds here in Saturday's Colonel R.S. McLaughlin Handicap.

"But I want to find an easier spot for him, and he'll be running for $200,000 instead of $100,000."
