Saratoga: It's Me Mom will play try and catch me in Honorable Miss

Barbara D. Livingston
It's Me Mom looks like the speed of the speed in the Honorable Miss.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – There is a ton of speed signed on for Friday’s $200,000 Honorable Miss Handicap at Saratoga, but none may be quite as fast as It’s Me Mom, who will try to blaze her way to the first graded stakes win of her career in the six-furlong sprint.

Woodbine: Incredicat stretches out to face elders in Seagram

Michael Burns
Incredicat will stretch out from six furlongs to 1 1/16 miles and challenge older horses in the Seagram Cup.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario — Incredicat has had a rather unorthodox campaign this year.

Abandoning the road to the Queen’s Plate after ending the runner-up in the 1 1/8-mile Plate Trial, Incredicat was brought back in the six-furlong Achievement and chased the front-running Jenna’s Wabbit en route to another second-place finish.

Now, due to an absence of other appropriate opportunities, Incredicat will be traveling 1 1/16 miles on Saturday and facing older horses in the Grade 3, $150,000 Seagram Stakes at Woodbine.

Del Mar: Rousing Sermon gets class relief in Real Good Deal Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
Rousing Sermon will race with California-breds for the first time since last October in Friday's $200,000 Real Good Deal Stakes at Del Mar.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Five times earlier this year, Rousing Sermon started in graded stakes in California, Kentucky, and Louisiana.

He was beaten each time, with performances ranging from a third in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby in April to an eighth in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby on May 5.

Fourth in the Grade 2 Swaps Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park on July 4, Rousing Sermon has an easier task in Friday’s $200,000 Real Good Deal Stakes at Del Mar. He faces California-breds for the first time since he won the California Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita last October.

One race later, the Christophe Clement-trained 4-year-old Philly Ace, who opened his 2012 campaign with two consecutive narrow victories against open company, seeks his first stakes win in the 1 1/16-mile Robellino.

Remington Park: Diamond Joe eyes Oklahoma Derby

Diamond Joe, a Nebraska-based 3-year-old who has won his last seven starts by a combined margin of 48 lengths, could get his first significant class test next month in the $400,000 Oklahoma Derby. Trainer Chuck Turco said the horse is being considered for the Remington Park race that Diamond Joe’s sire, Dazzling Falls, won for Turco in 1995.

Diamond Joe had been a candidate for the $100,000 Prelude at Louisiana Downs on Saturday, but his connections have decided to pass the Super Derby prep and instead contemplate the Oklahoma Derby, a 1 1/8-mile race on Sept. 30.

Monmouth: Northern Cotton tries to fire fresh in sprint feature

OCEANPORT, N.J. – Northern Cotton, already a well-traveled filly, makes her Monmouth Park debut on Friday in the $42,000 feature for fillies and mares.

The first-level optional $40,000 claimer, which will be contested at six furlongs, attracted eight runners. None of her rivals has ranged as far and as wide as Northern Cotton. The 3-year-old started her career last summer at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg, Canada, where she went 1 for 3.

Looking for a warmer climate for the filly to winter, Quest Dor Stable reached out to trainer Jane Cibelli.

West Virginia Derby: Le Bernardin faces big challenge at Mountaineer

Barbara D. Livingston
Le Bernardin will take on Hansen in Saturday's West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer.

Kiaran McLaughlin has a healthy respect for the Eclipse Award that Hansen earned last year as a 2-year-old. That’s a primary reason McLaughlin would accept something less than a victory Saturday when he sends out Le Bernardin against Hansen in the Grade 2, $750,000 West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer Park in Chester, W.Va.

“I’d like to take second money right now, if you’d guarantee it to me,” McLaughlin said.

Jack Coady/Coady Photography
Master Rick had tough times in Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont and the Grade 3 Matt Winn at Churchill Downs.

BOSSIER CITY, La. – The first of three “Super Saturdays” is slated for this weekend at Louisiana Downs, with the $100,000 Prelude Stakes anchoring a four-stakes, 10-race program. Louisiana Cup Day on Aug. 18 and Sept. 8, the date of this year’s Grade 2, $500,000 Super Derby, carry the same Super Saturday designation.

This year’s edition of the Prelude is the deepest in years. Stakes winners Master Rick and Top Cat Boogie head up the cast shooting for the $60,000 first prize and an all-fees paid berth in next month’s Super Derby.
