Saratoga: Bush satisfied with slower work by Get Stormy

Get Stormy, who is preparing for the Grade  2 Fourstardave next weekend, worked five furlongs over the Oklahoma turf course in 57 seconds and change on July 23. He came back and breezed the same distance in 59.72 over the same course on Wednesday with jockey Eddie Castro aboard. So which was the better work? Best to let trainer Tom Bush answer that question.

Saratoga: Jersey Town tests tender feet in prep for Vanderbilt

Provided his feet don’t fail him between now and Sunday, Jersey Town will return to the races in the Grade 1, $400,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap at Saratoga.

Jersey Town, the 2010 Cigar Mile winner, has had chronic foot issues throughout his career, but this year they have limited him to just one start. On Wednesday, Jersey Town worked four furlongs in 48.04 seconds over Saratoga’s main track and afterward trainer Barclay Tagg said the horse should be fit enough for his first race since March 31, when he was second in the Sir Shackleton Stakes at Gulfstream.

Del Mar: Garcia begins three-day suspension Friday

Jockey Martin Garcia on Friday was scheduled to begin a three-day suspension for careless riding, a penalty assessed by Del Mar’s stewards following last Friday’s fourth race, which Garcia won aboard Candy Waltz.

The stewards conducted an inquiry into the race and let the result stand, ruling that the incident in which Candy Waltz bumped other rivals did not impact the order of finish. But they did cite Garcia for carelessness, hence the suspension.

Emerald Downs: Matias having breakthrough year

AUBURN, Wash. – Javier Matias’s wife, Elsa, stopped a reporter the other day to ask that more be written about her husband. It was a sensible request. Including his victory Sunday aboard Mike Man’s Gold in the Premio Esmeralda Stakes, the veteran jockey had ridden 24 winners through the first 52 days of the Emerald Downs meeting to rank eighth in the standings. More important, Matias has four stakes victories at the stand, tied at the top with leading rider Juan Gutierrez.

Saratoga: Post 6 ideal spot for Agave Kiss in Prioress

Barbara D. Livingston
Agave Kiss, with trainer Rudy Rodriguez up, works four furlongs in 50.16 seconds over Saratoga’s main track Wednesday.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – While the draw for Saturday’s Grade 1 Whitney Handicap drew most of the attention here Wednesday, there was still a little drama surrounding the draw for the other Grade 1 race on the card, the $300,000 Prioress for 3-year-old fillies.

Trainer Rudy Rodriguez said he would scratch his speedy filly Agave Kiss if she drew an inside post for the Prioress. Agave Kiss suffered her first setback in seven career starts when finishing a tiring fifth after breaking from the rail as the 1-5 favorite in the Grade 3 Victory Ride four weeks ago.

Del Mar notes: Include Me Out looks to keep focus in Clement Hirsch

Benoit & Associates
Include Me Out will go for her fourth graded stakes win of 2012 in the Clement Hirsch.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Everything was going fine for Include Me Out in the Grade 1 Vanity Handicap at Betfair Hollywood Park on June 16, until she was past the sixteenth pole, leading by about two lengths.

“She pulled herself up,” trainer Ron Ellis said.

Include Me Out eased up just enough to be caught by Love Theway Youare and lost the race over 1 1/8 miles by 2 1/2 lengths.

Ellis insists that is not a true indication of Include Me Out’s ability.

“You can’t judge her off her last race,” he said.

Northlands: Madeira Park tries to run down Plethora in Northlands Oaks

Hastings invader Madeira Park looks like a serious threat to win her first stakes race when she runs in the $50,000 Northlands Oaks at Northlands Park on Friday night. The one-mile race for 3-year-old fillies drew eight horses and goes as the seventh race.

Madeira Park is eligible for a first-level allowance race but is coming off two solid efforts in stakes at Hastings in the Emerald Downs on June 10 and the Supernaturel on July 7. Both races were at 1 1/16 miles and were easily won by Evelyn’s Dancer.
