Empire Maker sold to Japanese breeders

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Juddmonte Farms has sold its homebred Belmont Stakes winner Empire Maker privately to Japanese interests, according to an announcement sent out Friday evening by the farm's advertising agent, Lance Bell.

The one-line announcement said only that Empire Make, a 10-year-old Unbridled horse, has been sold to the JBBA, the Japanese Bloodstock Breeders' Association.

Quality Road's stud fee to start at $35K

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Quality Road will launch his stud career at Lane's End with a $35,000 fee, the Kentucky farm announced Friday.

A 4-year-old Elusive Quality colt, Quality Road retired after finishing last of 12 in the Breeders' Cup Classic. He is a seven-time graded winner, including four Grade 1 victories, and earned more than $2.2 million.

Half-sister to Uncle Mo sells for $400,000

A weanling filly out of the mare Saratoga Humor, a two-time stakes winner during her racing career, sold for $180,000 Friday at the Keeneland November breeding stock auction.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - A 3-year-old half-sister to likely 2-year-old champion and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Uncle Mo took top billing Friday at the Keeneland November breeding stock auction, selling to WinStar Farm for $400,000.

Trained by Ken McPeek, Grosse Pointe Anne has won 1of 6 starts to date and earned $21,723. She’s by Silver Deputy and out of Uncle Mo’s dam, the Arch mare Playa May, who sold for $1,650,000 at the Nov. 7 Fasig-Tipton November sale. Coolmore Stud purchased Playa Maya, who was carrying a Broken Vow foal.

Weanlings give Thursday session a lift at Keeneland

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Weanlings were in demand Thursday at Keeneland's two-week November auction, a bright spot in a session that posted losses across the board.

Thursday’s fourth session grossed $16,808,900 for 263 horses. The gross was down 18 percent despite the fact that the session sold more horses than last year, when 244 brought $20,399,700. Average price also declined by 24 percent, from $83,605 to $63,912, and median dropped 25 percent, from $60,000 to $45,000. Session buybacks climbed, from 19 percent last year to 26 percent.

Super Saver's stud fee to start at $20K

Kentucky Derby hero Super Saver will stand for $20,000 for his first year at stud, WinStar Farm announced Thursday.

"We've had overwhelming response since announcing Super Saver's retirement, and we felt at $20,000 he would be placed in the market to have a strong first book of mares, while also providing good value to breeders," WinStar's president and chief executive officer ,Elliott Walden, said.

At 3:30 p.m., weanlings commanded five of the session’s top six prices, behind the $370,000 Cozzene mare Conchita.

Vale of York, won BC Juvenile, retired to stud

Darley Stud has retired the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner, Vale of York, to its Kildangan Stud in Ireland. He will stand for 5,000 euros, or about $6,800, in 2011.

A 3-year-old Invincible Spirit colt defeated eventual juvenile champion Lookin at Lucky in last year’s Juvenile. Racing in Europe earlier in the season, Vale of York also won England’s Peter Willett Stardom Stakes at Goodwood, finished second in the Group 1 Gran Criterium in Italy, and placed third in the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot.

Adena fees mostly remain steady

Frank Stronach's Adena Springs Farm will keep its stallions' fees largely the same in 2011, although Ghostzapper and Macho Uno will see their fees trimmed from 2010 levels.

Ghostzapper will drop from $30,000 to $20,000 and Macho Uno falls from $25,000 to $15,000.

Awesome Again, the far-flung operation's most expensive sire, will continue to stand in Kentucky for $50,000, the same fee he had in 2010.

Other stallions at Adena's Kentucky division and their 2011 fees are Einstein, $7,500; Giacomo, $5,000; Red Bullet, private; and new addition Plan, $5,000.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - It was still largely a buyer's market Wednesday as the two-week Keeneland November sale entered its third session off losses that were expected but no less painful to sellers. But strong prices for individual mares and weanlings proved there was still money available, and some consignors were hopeful that strength in regional markets such as Pennsylvania could aid horses selling later in the auction.

Blame begins stallion career with $35,000 fee at Claiborne

Breeders' Cup Classic winner Blame will start his stud career with a $35,000 fee at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Ky., the farm announced Wednesday evening.

The 4-year-old Blame enters stud fresh off his head victory over previously undefeated Zenyatta. He will stand alongside his sire, Arch, whose fee will rise from $25,000 this year to $30,000 in 2011.

Two other Claiborne horses also will get fee increases. They are War Front, who goes from $10,000 to $15,000, and Flatter, whose fee climbs from $5,000 to $7,500.
