Flat Out to stand at Spendthrift Farm

Multiple Grade 1 winner Flat Out will make his debut at stud in 2014 at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Ky., where he will stand for an advertised fee of $10,000.

The 7-year-old son of Flatter will be included in Spendthrift’s “Share the Upside” incentive program. He was retired earlier this month with nine wins in 29 career starts for earnings of $3,645,383. Campaigned by the majority of his career by owner Art Preston’s Preston Stables, he was trained by Charles "Scooter" Dickey and later, Bill Mott.

After Market sold to stand in Turkey

Grade 1-winning stallion After Market has been sold to the Jockey Club of Turkey, and will stand the 2014 breeding season for an advertised fee of $3,925 (8,000 Turkish Lira), Racing Post reports.

The 10-year-old son of Storm Cat had previously spent his entire stallion career at Lane’s End in Versailles, Ky., where he retired to stud in 2008. He stood the 2013 season for a fee of $5,000.

After Market is the sire of three crops of racing age. His best runners include Grade 1 winner Lady of Fifty, Group 2 winner Gocek, and Grade 3 winners Closing Range and Volcat.

Gig Harbor to Victory Rose Thoroughbreds in California

Multiple stakes winner Gig Harbor will make his stallion debut in 2014 at Victory Rose Thoroughbreds in Vacaville, Calif. for an advertised fee of $1,500, BloodHorse reports.

The 5-year-old son of City Zip won five of nine starts during his racing career for earnings of $143,300. Racing in both Southern and Northern California, Gig Harbor won the Alcatraz Stakes and Oakland Stakes at Golden Gate, and finished third in the Harry Henson Stakes at Hollywood Park.

Grade 1 winner, prominent broodmare Nastique dies at age 29

Nastique, a four-time Grade 1 winner and producer of two graded/group stakes winners, died from the infirmities of old age at Brookdale Farm in Versailles, Ky. She was 29.

Fred Seitz Jr., Brookdale’s general manager, said the farm took ownership of Nastique after she was pensioned from broodmare duty, and she served as an all-purpose caretaker mare in her later years. She was buried on the farm.

Kettle Corn retired to Fair Winds Farm

Kettle Corn, winner of the San Diego Handicap, has been retired to stud.

Grade 2 winner Kettle Corn has been retired from racing due to a ligament injury and will stand the 2014 breeding season at Fair Winds Farm in Waynesville, Ohio for an advertised fee of $3,000.

The 6-year-old son of Candy Ride finishes his career with eight wins in 26 starts for earnings of $853,361. His marquee wins came in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap and the Grade 3 Native Diver Handicap, and his 2013 campaign also included runner-up finishes in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic and Hollywood Gold Cup, as well as the Grade 2 Mervyn LeRoy Handicap.

Slight decline of mares bred in England and Ireland

The number of mares in the Great Britain and Ireland covered by registered stallions, as well as those countries’ broodmare populations, fell slightly in 2013, according to the Weatherbys Return of Mares.

The Return of Mares data also showed that the rate of decline in both categories slowed compared to the changes between 2011 and 2012. The figures were originally reported in Racing Post.

The only hole in the résumé of Racing Hall of Fame member and leading sire A.P. Indy is a win in the Kentucky Derby, both as a racehorse and a sire. After the courageous victory of his son Honor Code in the Remsen Stakes on Nov. 30, is it too much to hope that a horse from A.P. Indy’s final crop of only 36 foals might finally earn the roses that have eluded him throughout his long and incredibly productive life?
