Irish foal crop grows in 2014, Great Britain shrinks

The Irish foal crop grew 6 percent in 2014, while the foal population in Great Britain declined, Racing Post reports.

Through Sept. 30, a total of 7,440 foals were registered in Ireland from the most recent foaling season. It was the second straight year of growth for the country, after finishing at 7,051 in 2013, and 6,884 in 2012 at the same point in those respective years.

"There's definitely optimism coming back into the market,” Weatherbys Ireland chief executive Ronan Murphy told Racing Post, “but the figures need to be reviewed against the high of 2007."

Lady Eli breakout performer for sire Divine Park

Tom Keyser
Lady Eli and jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. win the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf by 2 1/4 lengths Friday.

The fallout from the Breeders’ Cup Classic may have clouded the Horse of the Year picture, but on the undercard, other divisional rankings became much clearer. In the juvenile filly division, the performance of unbeaten Lady Eli in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf could produce an anomaly compared with most years since the Eclipse Awards for both champion juvenile categories are normally granted to dirt horses.

Sparkman: Sire after 'Elusive' honor

Debra A. Roma
Hootenanny, from the first crop of Elusive Quality's son Quality Road, won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

For a horse who led the American sire list in 2004, ranked fifth in 2008, and has sired 116 stakes winners, Elusive Quality gets relatively little respect from the commercial market. His 34 yearlings sold this year have averaged $84,056, and stallion stations have hardly been clamoring to stand his sons at stud.
