Kevin Engelhard, Mike Ferrozzo, Chris Littlemore, and Ken Seeman have been selected by a vote of their peers for induction into the National Thoroughbred Racing Association Horseplayers Championship Hall of Fame, the NTRA announced on Friday.
The four handicapping contest veterans will join 29 other horseplayers already voted into the Hall of Fame since its inception 12 years ago. Inductees are voted into the Hall of Fame based on the results of nearly 1,000 ballots sent to current National Horseplayers Championship Tour members.
Derby prep season hits full swing this weekend. Couldn’t make much of the Gotham card in New York, so the focus turns to Florida, a bit of New Orleans lagniappe thrown in.
Fountain of Youth
Some folks have published stats, discouraging ones, regarding trainer Bill Mott’s strike rate with second-time starters in stakes – horses like Chief Wallabee in the Fountain of Youth.
Daily Racing Form Formulator stats only go back five years. The sample is small, so I looked at the actual horses, not just numbers.

Southereastern (#3) figures to attract some default support merely due to connections, being trained by Brad Cox and ridden by Flavien Prat. This horse did have a minor excuse when spending a bit too much time on the rail in his last race during a period of time when that wasn't the ideal path on the racetrack. However, he's still achieved his best form going a mile, and it's unclear if he possesses the speed to be effective at this shorter distance.
RACE 10: NO SHOW SAMMY JO won a 1 3/8-mile stakes with authority in her penultimate start Dec. 24 over a troubled GALLANT GRETA. Both never fired a month later going 1 1/2 miles in the Grade 3 Christophe Clement and are eligible to rebound going 1 3/8 miles in the Grade 3 The Very One. The jockey switch to Luis Saez might be a plus for Gallant Greta, who has respectable numbers for renowned turf trainer Mike Maker. (2)

Comeback claiming veteran lagged off pace in sprint, lost ground on turn, went evenly in race dominated by speed. Useful comeback by 5-year-old who is likely to improve second start back.

I'll be interested to see how the public approaches Wynstock (#5), who I tentatively pegged as the morning line favorite in this competition $100k claimer. He's sharply moving up in class, but he did absolutely romp against weaker foes last time, drawing off to win by over 7 lengths with a 113 TimeformUS Speed Figure. A repeat of that performance could beat this field, but I'm wondering if he will be as effective cutting back slightly to a one-turn mile.

Linda Rice obviously holds a strong hand in this $16,000 claiming race sending out the two likely favorites. Coquito (#3) owns the better recent form, having hit the board in seven of her last eight starts. She most recently won against $20,000 foes, but that was a conditioned claiming race, and this might be a slightly tougher spot. She's claimed back by Linda Rice, who failed to get a win out of her when she previously had her in the barn during a couple of periods last year.
