RACE 10: Using them all in the Sanibel Island Stakes as it seems to be the type of race that can go any number of ways. It's also a race that lacks a clear-cut pace scenario, another reason why it could well come down to trips. (10)

I liked Chief Wallabee to win the Fountain of Youth last month. Bet like he would win, he did not, a victim of trip and a lack of experience in just his second start.
If Chief Wallabee went at 5-2 last out following a maiden win, how short will he be in the Florida Derby? Why does he always run with his head cocked to the right? Why does Irad Ortiz Jr. wind up on Renegade in Arkansas rather than Commandment in the Florida Derby? Why did I start feeling a week ago like Nearly wasn’t nearly as good as I thought he was two weeks ago?
Early speed – that’s what American racing, especially on dirt, is all about. We’ve got three plausibly live front-runners in Saturday stakes races. Let’s see if they can press their pace advantage.

Eisenhower was president the last time Richard Mandella ran a horse at Turfway Park.
Okay, that’s an exaggeration.

A few horses in this race are exiting that Feb. 26 race won by Southeastern. It was a speed-favoring track and Mercilesanihilator (#3) was unable to clear off up front ahead of that eventual winner. He dueled inside of that foe in a tight spot and ultimately faded. That was his second consecutive race in which he had a less than ideal trip, since he was chasing two-wide against a bias two back. I think he's the horse to beat, but now he's going to be a short price.

The likely favorites in this $50,000 claiming race all have their flaws. Smokin' Hot Kitty (#3) is the best horse in this race when she's in top form, but it's hard to know what to expect from her after she never ran a step off the layoff at Laurel last time. She had been similarly disappointing when last seen at Saratoga prior to the layoff, and now she drops in for a tag for the first time in nearly two years. Perhaps she rebounds here, but I wouldn't want to take a short price on that prospect.
RACE 5: PHOENIX OF WIT is dropping from allowance/optional-claiming company to this $25,000 claimer for nonwinners of three or nonwinners since Oct. 20. READY TO BATTLE ended her 2025 campaign at Woodbine on a positive note and is cheapening up for her second local outing. MOM’S MARTINI is getting some class relief for her second try off the Saffie Joseph Jr. claim, a 27 percent angle over the past five years. CHEEKIEST is making her third start off the shelf. (4)
