Joe Torre buys into French filly

DEL MAR, Calif. - Joe Torre, the manager of the New York Yankees, has bought a share in Cellamare, who will make her U.S. debut in Saturday's $150,000 San Clemente Handicap at Del Mar.

Torre will share ownership of the French import with Terry Lanni and Bernie Schiappa. Torre and Schiappa met during a golf tournament in Hawaii.

"He has a love for horses just like I do," Schiappa said. "That's how it got started."

Torre and Yankees coach Don Zimmer attended the races at Del Mar on Monday, an off day for the Yankees, who defeated the Anaheim Angels on Tuesday.

Kona Gold to horse park?

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Kona Gold, whose retirement from racing was announced Sunday, could end up at the Kentucky Horse Park alongside racing greats John Henry and Cigar.

The Kentucky Horse Park, which spotlights those champions in its daily Hall of Champions show, is on the list of possible destinations for Kona Gold, a 9-year-old Java Gold gelding.

"There's been a lot of discussion about it and a lot of interest, but it is still in the discussion stage," said the park's executive director, John Nicholson. "I think we'll know more once Saratoga is over."

No decision on Pennsylvania slots

The Pennsylvania Senate broke for the summer late Monday without addressing legislation that would legalize slots at racetracks, dimming the chances that a bill expanding gambling at tracks will be passed this year.

Both the Pennsylvania House and Senate have passed separate bills legalizing slots at tracks, but members of the leadership of both bodies disagree on what form expanded gambling should take. The leaders have said they do not believe that legislators and Gov. Ed Rendell, a proponent of slots at tracks, will be able to agree on a bill this year.

Corrections

* An article about Saratoga in Monday's and Tuesday's editions misstated the identity of the horse who broke in a tangle in Saturday's opening race and led to a refund of wagers after the horse was declared a nonstarter. The nonstarter was Tennessee Burbin, not Congress Park.

Sunday's stakes recaps

Special Ring sets record in Eddie Read

DEL MAR, Calif. - Two years ago in the Eddie Read Handicap, Special Ring bolted, ran off to a needless long lead, and tired to finish last. He was gelded before he ran again.

Since then, he had won 5 of 11 starts and had come tantalizingly close to winning a graded stakes. He waited until Sunday, though, in the 30th running of the Grade 1 Eddie Read, to run the race of his life.
