Justin N. Lane
Vino Rosso (right) got his nose down first in Saturday's Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont but was disqualified to second for making contact with Code of Honor (left) during the stretch drive.

ELMONT, N.Y. – One of the key questions surrounding Code of Honor and his chances in the Breeders’ Cup Classic is how well he bounces back off what was a hard race in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, where he was beaten a nose by Vino Rosso, but was elevated to first following the disqualification of Vino Rosso for interference.

Ollie's Candy zips a half-mile for Breeders' Cup Distaff

Benoit Photo
Ollie’s Candy (right) and Secret Spice, 1-2 finishers in the Clement L. Hirsch at Del Mar in July, will square off again Sunday with a Breeders’ Cup Distaff berth on the line in the Zenyatta.

ARCADIA, Calif. – A busy morning for John Sadler-trained Breeders’ Cup candidates continued Saturday at 7:50 a.m., when Distaff-bound Ollie’s Candy worked a sharp half-mile at Santa Anita under exercise rider and assistant trainer Juan Leyva. Sadler earlier worked Higher Power (Classic) and Catalina Cruiser (Dirt Mile or Sprint).

Ollie’s Candy worked by herself in 47.20 seconds, a snappy drill that was her first since a better-than-looked third behind Paradise Woods and Secret Spice in the Grade 1 Zenyatta Stakes on Sept. 29.

Sadler using proven method to prepare Higher Power for Breeders' Cup Classic

Emily Shields
Pacific Classic winner Higher Power is following the same training plan that Accelerate used last year prior to winning the Breeders' Cup Classic.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The plan that trainer John Sadler had leading up to the Breeders’ Cup Classic worked so well with Accelerate last year that he’s doing the same with Higher Power, who had the first of his three works in preparation for the $6 million Classic on Saturday morning at Santa Anita.

Higher Power turned in his drill only moments after Catalina Cruiser, also trained by Sadler, worked as well for the Breeders’ Cup, though his race of choice is still to be determined.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Oleksandra won the Franklin County Stakes in such rousing fashion Friday at Keeneland that her ownership partners in Team Valor International now face a difficult decision in regard to whether to run the mare back in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint.

“If you look at it from an intellectual point of view, the answer would be ‘no,’ ” Team Valor president Barry Irwin said after Oleksandra blew past the other two favorites in the 23rd running of the Grade 3, $150,000 Franklin County. “But when emotion gets involved, and a horse wins like this, anything is possible.”
