Sweet Melania and Jose Ortiz are all alone at the finish of the Jessamine Stakes.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – On paper, the 29th Jessamine Stakes looked like it might unfold in any manner of ways – but once the field of 14 2-year-old fillies straightened away down the backstretch of the Keeneland turf course, it was nothing but a one-filly race.

Sweet Melania, ridden by Jose Ortiz, dominated from the five-furlong pole to the wire, earning the 10th and last Win and You’re In berth to the Breeders’ Cup of this meet by virtue of a record-setting romp Wednesday in the Grade 2, $200,000 Jessamine.

The Grade 1, $1 million Shadwell Turf Mile on Saturday at Keeneland was the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Win and You’re In race linked to the Breeders’ Cup Mile, and all credit to Bowies Hero for a convincing, professional victory there that punched his Breeders’ Cup ticket.

Sometime Tuesday, Dan Blacker, an English expatriate trainer based in California, got in touch with Brendan Walsh, an Irish expatriate trainer based in Kentucky. Was Walsh, Blacker wondered, planning on sending the 2-year-old Vitalogy to the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf? And if he was, might he reconsider?

Foreign participation looks light for Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint

Battaash wins the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York in August. He is a candidate for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint.

Unlike the other Breeders’ Cup races contested on turf, Europeans have made little noise in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, with every edition of the race since it was added to the program in 2008 captured by a U.S.-based runner. That may continue to be the case this year, as the top runners from various international jurisdictions aren’t likely to make the trip to California.

Barbara D. Livingston
Midnight Bisou is the favorite for this year’s BC Distaff.

ARCADIA, Calif. – There was something familiar about Midnight Bisou’s half-mile work Monday at Santa Anita, 51.60 seconds under exercise rider Angel Garcia. The favorite for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff was working for the first time since returning to California.

“An easy half to get acquainted with the racetrack,” assistant trainer Scott Blasi said. “She bounced off the racetrack. That’s exactly how we wanted her to feel.”

Mongolian Groom must pay highest nomination fee, but that has gotten less expensive

Barbara D. Livingston
The owner of Mongolian Groom will have to pay $200,000 to make him eligible for the Breeders' Cup Classic.

The decision by the connections of Mongolian Groom to make him eligible to the Breeders’ Cup Classic by paying a nomination fee of $200,000 seems a steep price to pay, but in fact he could have gotten in earlier for a far cheaper price, and the Breeders’ Cup has made the process much more affordable than in its earlier days.
