Mazarine winner Witwatersrand switches to dirt for Forward Gal

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Witwatersrand, [pronounced vit-vaters-rond], is named for gold fields in South Africa. The 3-year-old filly will try to see if there is a pot of gold for her on dirt when she makes her first start on that surface in Saturday’s Grade 3, $125,000 Forward Gal Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.

At 2, Witwatersrand, a daughter of Connect trained by Mark Casse, went 2 for 3 over Woodbine’s synthetic surface, including a victory in the Grade 3 Mazarine Stakes.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The 3-year-old Parchment Party, a winner of both his starts at Churchill Downs last fall, has been sent to the farm for 60 days, trainer Bill Mott said Sunday.

Mott worked the horse twice at Payson Park, about a month apart, before deciding to turn him out.

“He’s a June foal. He looks like he needs a little time to grow up,” Mott said.

Domestic Product, trained by Chad Brown, was tugging on the bit wearing blinkers in his last two starts, a maiden win and in the Remsen.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – While Sierra Leone certainly earned his way onto the Triple Crown trail by rallying from last to finish second in the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes last December, his trainer, Chad Brown, had another horse in that race he hasn’t given up on yet.

Happy with the way Domestic Product has trained this winter at Payson Park, Brown entered him in Saturday’s Grade 2, $250,000 Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park where he will take on Fierceness, the 2-year-old champion, in a field of eight.

Though she hasn’t won going long yet, World Traveler has run her two best speed figures since trainer Gregg Sacco stretched her out in distance last fall at Tampa Bay Downs.

Wednesday, World Traveler will try and break through the second-level allowance condition when she makes her third start around two turns in Tampa’s co-featured allowance/optional-claiming scheduled for one mile on turf.
