Steel Racer wheels back on 11 days' rest Thursday at Gulfstream Park.

Abundancia gets a complete makeover when she makes her 4-year-old debut Thursday at Gulfstream Park in a first-level allowance/optional $25,000 claiming race going one mile that serves as the feature on a nine-race program.

Abundancia, a Kentucky-bred daughter of California Chrome who made the first 11 starts of her career in Peru, gets Lasix and blinkers for the first time. She also gets to run on what should be a fast main track for the first time. Abundancia won four starts over dirt tracks labeled good in Peru last summer.

Katie Davis won seven races at Saratoga last summer.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Katie Davis had a few items on her bucket list when she decided to follow her father and become a jockey.

One was to win a race at Saratoga. She checked that off the list last summer when she won seven at the Spa, including wins on three consecutive days.

A second wish-list item was riding internationally. Friday, Davis will check that box when she competes in the International Jockey Challenge at King Abdulaziz Racetrack in Saudi Arabia. The event is held the night before the $20 million Saudi Cup.

Sharp Lorenzo stretches out as favorite in Luke Kruytbosch Stakes

PHOENIX – Sharp Lorenzo looms an overwhelming favorite in Thursday’s $60,000 Luke Kruytbosch Stakes at Turf Paradise. The Southern California shipper heads a field of eight 3-year-olds going a mile on the main track in a race named for the one-time track announcer who passed away in 2008.

Owned by Jeremy Ramsland and trained by Lorenzo Campuzano, Sharp Lorenzo is a gelded son of Sharp Azteca. He is coming off a game optional-claiming win at Santa Anita on Feb. 2. All his work so far has been sprinting, so Thursday’s added ground is a new wrinkle.

Spieth could edge closer to 5,000 wins with Where Paradise Lay

Coady Photography
Scott Spieth had 4,998 victories through racing on Sunday.

By design, Scott Spieth is riding sparingly this winter at Tampa Bay Downs. It’s not because he’s trying to hang on to reach a milestone.

Spieth is closing on his 5,000th career victory, a feat only 34 other riders have accomplished in Thoroughbred racing. He won his 4,998th race Saturday, his fourth win from 18 mounts in 2024. The way Spieth sees it, he has already surpassed the 5,000-win plateau.

Queen Goddess will move back to dirt for the Grade 1 Beholder Mile at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Queen Goddess won the Grade 1 American Oaks at 1 1/4 miles on dirt at Santa Anita in December 2021 after the race was transferred from turf because of wet conditions.

A four-time stakes winner, Queen Goddess has not raced on dirt in California since the American Oaks, but will return to the surface for the Grade 1 Beholder Mile for fillies and mares on March 9 at Santa Anita. The 6-year-old mare’s recent exercise on the surface has swayed the decision, trainer Michael McCarthy said over the weekend.

“She’s trained well on the dirt,” McCarthy said.
