Attard, Casse square off in Prince of Wales

Michael Burns
Midnight Mascot, who rallied wide for third in the King’s Plate, is the 5-2 favorite in the Prince of Wales. He will be joined in the gate by stablemate Essex Serpent, who was 10th in the Plate.

Tuesday’s 89th running of the $400,000 Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie looks like a showdown between Team Attard and Team Casse.

Trainer Kevin Attard has trainer Mark Casse outnumbered 4 to 2 in the middle leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, and he didn’t even enter King’s Plate winner Caitlinhergrtness, who is getting a little break. Attard runs Pierre and Jokestar, the fourth- and fifth-place finishers in the King’s Plate, along with Airosa and Bedard. All are competing on dirt for the first time in the 1 3/16-mile test for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds.

Mischief River forces way into Juvenile Turf with impressive work

After two starts on dirt, Mischief River will try the turf in Sunday's Del Mar Juvenile Turf.

When Mischief River worked on turf for the first time at Del Mar on a recent Sunday morning, trainer James Glenn Jr. saw enough to change race plans for early September.

Instead of a start in Sunday’s Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity on dirt, Mischief River will run in the Grade 3 Del Mar Juvenile Turf at a mile on the same day. A half-mile turf workout in 49.20 seconds clinched the plan.

“He seemed pretty level and his gallop-out was really strong,” Glenn said. “Once he passed the wire, he didn’t want to pull up.

Getaway Car, the 2-for-2 Bob Baffert-trained Del Mar Futurity favorite, will need an alert break from post 1 in the seven-furlong race.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Trainer Bob Baffert does not win the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity every year, but he wins it most years.

Sunday at Del Mar, closing day of the summer meet, Baffert is likely to extend his record win total in the seven-furlong stakes. He entered three in the Del Mar Futurity, a race he has won the last three years and 17 times since 1995, when he ran third with Cavonnier, his first Futurity starter.

At the age of 6, Prisoner can be described as an old class horse. Not only is he 11 for 24 in his career, but he has a bankroll of $342,437. Recent stakes provide upgrades to Keeneland September catalog

Barbara D. Livingston
Chancer McPatrick, the Hopeful winner, has a half-brother by Liam’s Map selling in Book 2.

The catalog for the Keeneland September yearling sale was released a bit more than a month before the sale begins its run on Monday, and the book has since been burnished by half-siblings to four Grade 1 winners as a result of racing updates. The catalog could garner even more luster as this weekend’s major races unfold, adding intrigue to some of the later books of the sale that runs over 12 sessions through Sept. 21.

Deterministic won the Grade 3 Gotham in March, but was moved to turf after two disappointing dirt races in spring.

Get Smokin comes into the Kentucky Turf Cup off a nose win in the United Nations at Monmouth Park.

From once-started 2-year-olds in California to 6-year-old South African imports in Virginia, no stone is left unturned looking for Saturday stakes winners this week. Without further ado . . .

Del Mar Debutante

I’ve already tried once to beat 2-year-old filly Nooni. That came in the Sorrento, and while Vodka With a Twist briefly loomed in upper stretch, she failed to close the gap on the Bob Baffert-trained Noonie.
