Chancer McPatrick due for clean trip in Champagne

Barbara D. Livingston
Chancer McPatrick came running to win the Hopeful despite Flavien Prat losing an iron at the start. In his debut win, Chancer McPatrick had to rally from last place.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Chancer McPatrick has won each of his first two starts, and he hasn’t had a clean trip in either one of them. Saturday, he’ll break from the outside post in a field of 10 2-year-olds looking for Grade 1 glory in the $500,000 Champagne Stakes at Aqueduct.

The Champagne, one of four graded events on a 12-race card, will be the last Grade 1 race of the year run on the New York Racing Association circuit. It offers a fees-paid berth into the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile to be run Nov. 1 at Del Mar.

Axthelm wins an overnight race at Kentucky Downs on Sept. 1. He came back six days later to finish third at 30-1 in the Grade 2 Turf Sprint.

After running two big races in a six-day span last month at Kentucky Downs, the key question is whether Axthelm can ship to New York and replicate those performances when taking on eight rivals in Saturday’s $200,000 Belmont Turf Sprint at Aqueduct. The Grade 3 Turf Sprint will be decided at six furlongs on the outer course.

Brightwork training well, forces connections to take on elders in TCA

Barbara D. Livingston
Brightwork has trained so well that her connections will test her against elders in Saturday's TCA at Keeneland.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A plan B, born out of necessity, worked out for Brightwork this summer. After she was a late scratch from her planned season debut earlier in the month, she rerouted to the Grade 3 Prioress Stakes at Saratoga, and was gamely victorious in her first start in nearly 10 months.

Dreamaway looks to runaway from boys in Speakeasy Stakes

Dreamaway wins the $102,000 Colleen Stakes at Monmouth Park by 5 1/4 lengths.

ARCADIA, Calif. – If her trainer is right, the only filly in the $100,000 Speakeasy Stakes also is the speed of the speed. Considering that trainer Wesley Ward has won at least 90 stakes with turf sprinters, he would know.

Dreamaway shipped Wednesday to Santa Anita, where Saturday she can establish Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint credentials by smoking seven rivals in the Speakeasy. It won’t be easy. The five-furlong turf sprint is loaded with speed, perhaps none quicker than Dreamaway.

BC Juvenile Fillies berth up for grabs in wide-open Frizette

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Coming off a dominant 7 3/4-length debut victory in a six-furlong maiden race at Saratoga, Senza Parole figured to be a strong favorite in Saturday’s Grade 1, $400,000 Frizette Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Aqueduct.

But Senza Parole has come up with a physical issue that will not only knock her out of the Frizette, but also out of consideration for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies next month at Del Mar, trainer Chad Brown said Thursday.

Barbara D. Livingston
Off a second in the Nashville Derby, Carson's Run meets stablemate Deterministic in Saturday's Jockey Club Derby at Aqueduct.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – It has been a busy and successful summer for both Carson’s Run and Deterministic and their trainer Christophe Clement hopes the same will be said about the autumn campaign for both 3-year-olds.

Saturday, at Aqueduct, Carson’s Run and Deterministic head a field of seven entered in the Grade 3, $500,000 Jockey Club Derby Invitational, a race Clement hopes leads one or both to the Grade 1, $300,000 Hollywood Derby on Nov. 30 at Del Mar.

In two starts, Tenma has won the Del Mar Debutante by a nose and a maiden race by a neck. Bob Baffert is adding blinkers to her equipment for the Oak Leaf Stakes.

ARCADIA, Calif. – If a California filly ends up winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies next month at Del Mar, chances are she is running Saturday at Santa Anita and trained by Bob Baffert.

Baffert entered four of the eight fillies in the Grade 2 Oak Leaf Stakes, a Win and You’re In that is race 3 and the first of five stakes. The 1 1/16-mile Oak Leaf, called the Chandelier Stakes since 2012, returns to its original name Saturday.

Iscreamuscream faces older, goes longer in Rodeo Drive

Iscreamuscream is 4 for 4 in her career and comes into the Rodeo Drive off a win in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks.

The steady progress the undefeated filly Iscreamuscream has shown through four starts, including a win in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks in August, has led to a season-defining appearance in Saturday’s Grade 2 Rodeo Drive Stakes at Santa Anita.

The $200,000 Rodeo Drive will be Iscreamuscream’s first race against older fillies and mares and first at 1 1/4 miles on turf.

Iscreamuscream was considered for the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup for 3-year-old fillies at Keeneland later this month until trainer Phil D’Amato settled on the Rodeo Drive.

Sweet Azteca firing on all cylinders into Chillingworth

Benoit Photo
As a top female sprinter in the country, Sweet Azteca headlines Saturday's Chillingworth at Santa Anita.

Sweet Azteca has won her last two starts in graded stakes by a combined 12 lengths since early July.

Her recent workouts have been so impressive to trainer Michael McCarthy that he has chosen to run the three-time stakes winner in Saturday’s Grade 3 Chillingworth Stakes at Santa Anita instead of waiting for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Del Mar on Nov. 2.

“Watching her work, I’d rather get a race in her than watch her work 58 or 59 [seconds] every week,” McCarthy said on Wednesday.

Flag of Honour wins the Grade 3 Jacques Cartier in June for trainer Julia Carey.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Julia Carey sends out her stable stars Flag of Honour and Lac Macaza in different stakes Saturday, when Woodbine stages four added-money events on the grass, three of which are graded.

Flag of Honour is returning from a summer vacation in the Grade 2, $250,000 Nearctic, which also lured reigning Canadian champion male sprinter Patches O’Houlihan. The six-furlong sprint was won last year by Big Invasion, who subsequently finished a troubled second in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita.
