Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint: Soul of an Angel a one-turn mare

Lauren King/Coglianese Photos
After finishing a well-beaten third in the 1 1/8-mile Personal Ensign, trainer Saffie Joseph jr. shortened up Soul of an Angel to seven furlongs in the Princess Rooney, which she won by 3 1/4 lengths.

Soul of an Angel displayed her quality over the summer when beaten a scant head by champion Idiomatic in the Grade 3 Molly Pitcher going 1 1/16 miles at Monmouth Park.

After Soul of an Angel finished third, 10 1/4 lengths behind Raging Sea and Idiomatic in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign at nine furlongs, trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. cut the 5-year-old mare back to seven furlongs for Gulfstream Park’s Grade 3 Princess Rooney, a Win and You’re In for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile: Post Time earned his chance

Barbara D. Livingston
Post Time will make his second start around two turns in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.

Post Time ran some races this summer at Saratoga that have earned him a trip to Del Mar for the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile on Nov. 2.

He was second in the Metropolitan Handicap in June and third in the Whitney in August.

“He showed up in both of those Grade 1s,” said Brittany Russell, who trains Post Time. “He ran really hard. I think he’s earned his way to try it.

Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint: A few prep winners taking a pass

Barbara D. Livingston
Senbei, winner of the Belmont Turf Sprint last Saturday, is not committed to the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.

While the connections of the winners of several recent prep races for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint have indicated they don’t plan to travel to Del Mar, the races are still likely to factor into handicapping the five-furlong turf stakes.

Tunechi showed signs of life on class drop

Rebelious could go favored in Friday’s feature at Woodbine, a nonwinners-of-two event that combines Ontario-sired allowance stock with $40,000 claimers.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Tunechi appears to be rounding into form and will go back to the Tapeta in Friday’s headliner at Woodbine. The 1 1/16-mile event for nonwinners of two combines Ontario-sired allowance stock with $40,000 claimers and goes as the seventh race on an eight-race card.

A 3-year-old trained by Barbara Minshall, Tunechi notched a maiden-special turf sprint in his third start at 2 before finishing a respectable fourth behind Carson’s Run and future Canadian champion 2-year-old My Boy Prince in the Grade 1 Summer.

As typical this meet, the week begins with a pick six carryover

Barbara D. Livingston
Awesome Czech wins the Suzie O’Cain at Saratoga. In her most recent race she ended up on the early lead, which is not what trainer Horacio De Paz was expecting.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Never on Sunday.

That has been the theme of the pick six wager thus far this fall at the Belmont at the Big A meet as the pick six has not been solved on any of the four Sundays it has been offered at the meet. Thus, there is a $33,745 carryover into Thursday’s eight-race card at Aqueduct.

The sequence begins in race 3 (1:41 p.m. Eastern) and includes three turf races, each of those having the maximum 10 runners allowed, plus ample also-eligible entrants.

Parlay holds stakes advantage in Emerald Necklace

Parlay is the only entrant in the field of seven for Thursday’s $75,000 Emerald Necklace Stakes with a stakes placing – and not only that, she did so against colts. That makes her a big standout in Thistledown’s feature race for Ohio-accredited 2-year-old fillies.

Alcibiades winner Immersive isn't Cox's only talented juvenile filly

Immersive wins the Alcibiades at KEE Oct 4 2024

Following her Alcibiades win, Immersive will head to Del Mar as one of the leading contenders in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

LEXINGTON, KY. – Immersive came out of her Friday win in the Grade 1 Alcibiades in good shape, has returned to trainer Brad Cox’s string at Churchill Downs, and will be among the favorites – if not the favorite – in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Who knows if she’s even the leading 2-year-old filly in Cox’s barn?

East Avenue earns 95 Beyer for Breeders' Futurity romp

East Avenue wins Breeders' Futurity at KEE Oct 5 2024

In his second career start, East Avenue successfully stretched out from six furlongs to 1 1/16 miles and beat Grade 1 company.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – East Avenue made several points winning the Breeders’ Futurity on Saturday at Keeneland.

He showed he can go two turns after winning his career debut over six furlongs. He demonstrated that a step up in class, from maiden to Grade 1 competition, did not exceed his capacity, scoring by more than five lengths.

East Avenue ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.17, which announced him as just about the fastest 2-year-old dirt horse to have run in North America this year, his 95 Beyer Speed Figure second only to the 96 Ferocious received winning his debut.

Early pick five carryover of $265K will not be easy to take down

Thornbury wins maiden at KD Sept 7 2024
Coady Media
Thornbury, trained by Bill Mott, comes into race 8 at Keeneland on Wednesday off an easy maiden win at Kentucky Downs.

Even if Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott has a good day at Keeneland, and he might, it will come too late for horseplayers chasing an early pick five carryover into Wednesday’s program.

With a 23-1, a 50-1, and a 10-1 winning three of the first five races Sunday, no one proved deft enough to hit the first pick five on the card, and $265,934 from that pool rolls over to the pick five spanning Wednesday’s first five races.

Good luck with that.

You won’t find many more challenging sequences, and it is difficult getting traction in even one of these five contests.

Stakes winners drop down to allowance races on intriguing card

Debra A. Roma
Major Dude is part of a strong group of stakes winners that drop into allowance races on Thursday's card at Keeneland.

A number of entrants on Thursday’s Keeneland card wouldn’t have looked out of place in the stakes on opening weekend. Instead, they drop in class for allowance races, making for an interesting weekday card.
