Miss Code West will be well backed in Oklahoma Classics Distaff

Dustin Orona Photography
As a top Oklahoma-bred, Miss Code West is the expected favorite for Friday's Oklahoma Classics Distaff at Remington Park.

Miss Code West has established herself as one of the best Oklahoma-breds in training over the past two seasons and on Friday night she will be a strong favorite to defeat older rivals in the $145,000 Oklahoma Classics Distaff at Remington Park.

The race for fillies and mares at one mile and 70 yards is one of eight Oklahoma-bred stakes worth a cumulative $1 million. The Oklahoma Classics Night card of 10 races also includes a pair of starter allowances over seven furlongs. The series is led by the $175,000 Oklahoma Classics Classic.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile: Rigney owns a leading contender, and bred another

Jonathan's Way wins maiden at SAR Aug 17 2024
Barbara D. Livingston
Richard Rigney purchased Jonathan's Way, an Ohio-bred son of Vekoma, for $290,000 as a weanling. Jonathan's Way is 2 for 2 after winning a Saratoga maiden race and the Iroquois at Churchill Downs.

That Richard Rigney is the owner of one top contender and the breeder of another in this year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile is an example of the growth of his racing and breeding operation over the years.

As an owner, Rigney will send out Jonathan’s Way in this year’s $2 million Juvenile to be held Nov. 1 at Del Mar. Rigney also is the breeder of Chancer McPatrick, who comes into the Juvenile as a two-time Grade 1 winner and figures to go off the first or second choice in the Juvenile.

“Isn’t that crazy?” Rigney said.

Ellen Jay steps into stakes company in rescheduled Glen Cove

Ellen Jay will bring her undefeated turf record into Friday's Glen Cove Stakes at Aqueduct.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Ellen Jay will seek her first stakes victory in Friday’s rescheduled $135,000 Glen Cove Stakes at Aqueduct in a field that will look a lot less intimidating at the starting gate than it does on paper.

The Glen Cove, a six-furlong turf race for 3-year-old fillies, was postponed a week when an unhealthy air quality issue forced the New York Racing Association to cancel that day’s card. There were several changes to the lineup when the race was redrawn, but ultimately it looks like it will go with a familiar five-horse field at post time.

I'm Ripped takes rarely traveled route; $47K pick six carryover

Barbara D. Livingston
Doug O'Neill saddles I'm Ripped in the featured seventh race, as well as likely favorite Winds of Freedom in the third.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The frequency of pick six carryovers increased this autumn at Santa Anita; Friday marks the third carryover of the meet. The uptick is mostly because the pick six is tougher to hit since the track raised the minimum bet from $1 to $2.

What’s less frequent is a curiosity in the seventh race on Friday. A top contender in the California-bred allowance lost his summer debut at a low-profile track that rarely produces Southern California runners, much less winners. It’s a long way from Wyoming Downs to Santa Anita.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf: Minaret Station tries to land Walden a debut victory

Coady Media
Minaret Station was an upset winner of the Bourbon at Keeneland for trainer Will Walden.

No winner of the Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland went on to capture the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. Trainer Will Walden hopes his first Breeders’ Cup starter will be the first horse to do the double.

Minaret Station might come to Del Mar under the radar, but that didn’t matter in the Bourbon. At odds of 38-1, he blew past three rivals in the final furlong like they were tied to a post and galloped out powerfully – right into the Juvenile Turf.

Breeders' Cup Turf: If he shakes loose, Cabo Spirit could play spoiler

Benoit Photo
In front-running fashion, Cabo Spirit scored his biggest career win in the John Henry Turf Championship.

When Auguste Rodin won the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita last November as the 5-2 favorite, many trifecta bettors were foiled by the Japanese shipper Shahryar who was third at 25-1.

Back in 2019, the even-money favorite Bricks and Mortar was fully extended to win the BC Turf by a head over 51-1 United.

Katonah, along with Full Serrano, a part of a strong California-based contingent for this year's Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The two-year starter-allowance gravy train has ended for Fly the W, whose eligibility for those lucrative conditions ended the day after he finished second as a prohibitive 3-5 favorite against horses who had started for a claiming price of $12,500 here Aug. 25.

Australia: Traffic Warden could get right trip in Everest Stakes

Traffic Warden may be the spoiler in the Group 1 Everest Stakes at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, Australia, on Friday evening.

On three occasions in his nine-race career, Traffic Warden has closed with a flourish to win sprints. Twice, he has been beaten by a nose or short head.

With that style, Traffic Warden may be the runner to fear in a wide-open running of the $13.3 million Everest Stakes at six furlongs, the world’s richest sprint.
