Scipio, Freedom's Not Free to battle in the Baffle

Barbara D. Livingston
Scipio's last four starts have come at a mile, but trainer Richard Baltas thinks he'll be fine sprinting.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Scipio is the class of the $100,000 Baffle Stakes, and Freedom’s Not Free is the speed. Who will win the turf sprint for 3-year-olds Sunday at Santa Anita? Pick heads or tails.

Although seven are entered in the Baffle, stakes-placed Scipio and highly rated maiden winner Freedom’s Not Free figure as the choices. The betting market usually gets it right in the Baffle, as favorites have won the past four years and six of the last nine.

In his first start for Ned Allard, Quint’s Brew made short work of his eight rivals in the restricted Jennings Stakes on Jan. 18.

Quint’s Brew had his coming-out party when he rolled to a six-length victory at odds of 9-1 in the Jennings Stakes last month at Laurel Park. The odds figure to be much shorter Saturday when Quint’s Brew seeks to validate that performance in the $200,000 General George Stakes at Laurel.

The seven-furlong General George, which lost its Grade 3 status starting this year, drew only six runners and is one of four stakes on a nine-race card that begins at 12:10 p.m.
