Scipio may venture outside California for spring stakes

Benoit Photo
Scipio may target the Transylvania Stakes at Keeneland or possibly the Jeff Ruby on synthetic at Turfway Park.

Last summer and fall, Scipio amassed a collection of hard-luck losses in three turf stakes at one mile. This winter, he is collecting wins at Santa Anita, most recently in Sunday’s $101,000 Baffle Stakes for 3-year-olds on the hillside turf course.

This spring, Scipio is highly likely to race outside of California for the first time in the Grade 3 Transylvania Stakes, a $600,000 race for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles on turf at Keeneland on April 4.

“That’s a lot of money for a Grade 3,” trainer Richard Baltas said on Monday. “I’ll definitely look at it.”

“He’s just gotten into the business,” trainer Michael Stidham said of the new owner. “We just bought him some yearlings. And so this will be his first actual horse running in a race. It’s exciting for him.”

The Ozark is for 3-year-olds over six furlongs. It drew a field of nine and highlights a special Presidents Day card that begins at 12:30 p.m. Central.

Handsome Pants finds reasonable spot to right the ship

Handsome Pants wins maiden at CD Sept 14 2024
Coady Media
Handsome Pants rallied from sixth position in an 11-horse field to win his career debut going two turns at Churchill Downs in September. His two races since have not gone as well.

Handsome Pants has turned in two ugly races since a very promising debut victory in September, but he might not come up short in the featured fifth race Monday at Fair Grounds.

The Presidents Day feature is a first-level allowance for 3-year-olds with a $100,000 claiming option carded for 1 1/16 miles on dirt. Fair Grounds typically holds this race sometime during the weekend of the Risen Star Stakes giving horses not quite up to that level of competition a chance to run their way into the Louisiana Derby next month.
