Make Haste tries Coronation Cup after unplanned layoff; $118,028 pick six carryover

Barbara D. Livingston
Make Haste hasn’t run in the nearly 15 weeks since she won a first-level allowance April 13 at Gulfstream Park.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Make Haste should be fresh and ready to flaunt her speed when she heads the field of 3-year-old fillies entered in Friday’s Grade 3, $175,000 Coronation Cup scheduled for 5 1/2 furlongs over Saratoga’s Mellon Turf Course. Seven were entered for turf in the Coronation Cup, though Laurice and Gata Brazil were cross-entered in Saturday’s $100,000 Blue Sparkler, also a turf sprint, at Monmouth Park.

The Coronation Cup is part of a $1 pick six sequence that starts with a carryover of $118,028 after the bet went unsolved on Thursday's opening-day card.

Vazquez thinking about riding at Del Mar

Barbara D. Livingston
With Lone Star's riding title pretty much in hand, Ramon Vazquez may ride at Del Mar.

Jockey Ramon Vazquez, who leads the Lone Star Park colony with 50 wins through Thursday, is considering riding at Del Mar following the close of the Texas meet on Sunday, according to his agent, Cody Autrey.

“We’re discussing going to Del Mar over the break between Lone Star and Remington,” said Autrey. “Nothing’s set in stone yet.”

Autrey said Vazquez plans to ride this fall at Remington. Vazquez has a 16-win lead in the Lone Star standings over David Cabrera.

Ramirez-Rodriguez chasing Asmussen for first training title

Dustin Orona Photography
Headed into the final weekend of the meet, Abel Ramirez-Rodriguez is just one win back of Steve Asmussen in the trainer standings.

Trainer Abel Ramirez-Rodriguez has a lot at stake during the final week of the Lone Star Park, which closes Sunday.

Ramirez-Rodriguez, 45, is battling Lone Star’s all-time leading trainer, Steve Asmussen, for the title. It would be a first for Ramirez-Rodriguez, who began training on his own last August after serving as a longtime assistant to trainer Karl Broberg.

“We’re trying to beat the main man at Lone Star,” Ramirez-Rodriguez said. “So, all we can do is just try, just keep trying. We’ve got some live shots this week, but you never know.

Miss Mary Nell finally gets some softer company

Ryan Thompson/Coglianese Photos
Miss Mary Nell is the one to beat in Friday's feature at Gulfstream Park.

Miss Mary Nell, a 3-year-old filly trained by Carlos David, has spent the last two months squeezing water from stone against daunting Florida-based rivals. She may finally catch a break as the likely favorite in a $57,000 allowance on Friday at Gulfstream Park.

After two straight victories earlier this year, David reluctantly entered his filly against male runners in a $58,000 allowance in May, where she was a well-beaten runner-up behind Iron Hand, who won his next start as well, completing a four-race streak on synthetic for trainer Jose D’Angelo.

January gets serious weight break in Falmouth Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
Cinderella’s Dream nearly won the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf over 1 3/8 miles last year.

January could not handle fillies her own age in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, but maybe, with a meaningful weight break, she can take down older rivals Friday at Newmarket in the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes.

She has the right connections for the job in trainer Aidan O’Brien and jockey Ryan Moore and has roused the interest of antepost bettors. As of Wednesday, English bookmakers were offering January as the 5-2 co-favorite for the Falmouth, a gender-restricted straight mile that drew a field of eight.

Maine Governor Delays Online Casino Legalization

Legislation that legalizes online casinos in Maine will not become law until at least 2026 following Gov. Janet Mills’ (D) decision this week.

Mills’ office on Tuesday released a list of 60 bills on which she won’t act on until the next Legislature reconvenes in January. Included on her list was Legislative Document 1164 (LD 1164), which would make Maine the eighth state in the US with a legal online casino market.

Proctor back at Saratoga for first time since 2017

Trainer Tom Proctor is back in Saratoga for the first time in eight years, and his barn of 16 is top-heavy with 2-year-olds for his primary client, Glen Hill Farm.

Proctor hasn’t summered in Saratoga since 2017, when he went just 1 for 15. The year before, however, Proctor won six races from 14 starts.

The impetus for coming to Saratoga is that Glen Hill Farm, operated by Craig Bernick, is focusing on East Coast racing instead of California.

Espinoza jazzed to be riding at Saratoga

Barbara D. Livingston
Victor Espinoza had ridden just 26 horses this year before coming to Saratoga in mid-June.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Victor Espinoza said he came to Saratoga about a month ago for a vacation. Now, the 53-year-old jockey said he is working as hard as ever in an attempt to revitalize his Hall of Fame career.

One call to trainer Wesley Ward and one visit to the Saratoga backstretch has reinvigorated Espinoza, who plans to ride the meet here this summer instead of Del Mar, where he has spent the last few decades.
