Decadent will make her stakes debut in Tuesday's Cathryn Sophia at Parx.

Decadent, a 3-year-old filly trained by Kenny McPeek, will make her long-awaited stakes debut in the $200,000 Cathryn Sophia at Parx Racing on Tuesday. She may be lightly raced, but McPeek already has big plans for her after two unchallenged victories.

“She’s done everything right,” McPeek said. “She’s never been outworked or outrun. We’re hopeful that she can jump through this hoop and then take her to the [Grade 1 Cotillion].”

Sunday, Cy Fair looks to validate her impressive debut victory when she heads a field of eight entered in the $150,000 Bolton Landing Stakes scheduled for 5 1/2 furlongs over the Mellon turf course.

Kentucky Outlaw needs clean break shortening up in President's Sprint

Ryan Denver/EQUI-PHOTO
Kentucky Outlaw will get a cutback in distance for Monday's PTHA President’s Sprint Stakes at Parx.

Trainer Felissa Dunn wasn’t sure about sending Kentucky Outlaw to the Grade 1 Haskell Stakes last month. She’s also not sure about cutting back to 6 1/2 furlongs in the PTHA President’s Sprint Stakes at Parx Racing on Monday either, but the 3-year-old colt should have a strong chance with a clean break.

“He’s not that good of a horse for the Haskell,” Dunn said. “I think it was a waste. I hope he’ll do better, but there are some tough horses in this race too.”

Docklands (left) and Rosallion, one-two in the Queen Anne at the Royal Ascot meet, renew acquaintances in the Jacques Le Marois.

The jockey Christophe Lemaire’s return to France comes on a filly who has yet to race anywhere in Europe.

Ascoli Piceno, a high-level Japan-based sprinter-miler, traveled to Australia last September, finishing a subpar 12th, and went to Saudi Arabia in February, winning the 1351 Turf Sprint, so named because of its distance in meters. Sunday, she starts in the Group 1 Prix Jacques Le Marois at Deauville Racecourse in France, Lemaire’s home country and riding base before he became a full-time Japanese jockey in 2015.

Field and pace unsettled in Satin and Lace

Julie Wright
Gal in a Rush won last year’s Grade 3 Hendrie on Woodbine’s Tapeta and was third in the Presque Isle Masters.

Entries for the $100,000 Satin and Lace Stakes, to be run Monday at Presque Isle Downs, were taken six days prior to the race, on a Tuesday. But as of early Friday afternoon, the field for the race was still taking shape.

An overflow field of 13 fillies and mares – 12 may run – was entered for the six-furlong sprint on the Tapeta in Erie, Pa. The Satin and Lace is the local prep for the Grade 2, $300,000 Presque Isle Masters on Sept. 19.

Fond of You has right connections to win Sorority

Coady Media
Trainer Michael Stidham and owner Godolphin won Monmouth's Sorority in 2019 and send out Fond of You in Sunday's running.

Change has come to the Sorority Stakes since its winner last went on to capture a graded race, but the owner and trainer of the last such filly, Micheline, have the horse to beat in this year’s renewal of the $100,000 Sorority on Sunday at Monmouth Park.

Micheline, a Godolphin homebred trained by Michael Stidham, won the 2019 Sorority, landed the $500,000 Dueling Grounds Oaks, and finished second in the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup in 2020. In her 2021 debut as a 4-year-old she took down the Grade 2 Hillsborough at Tampa Bay.

Si That Tiger tries to stretch out in Muckleshoot Derby

Coady Media
Bodi Zafa wins the Turf Paradise Derby in March. He switches back to dirt after making his last two starts in Southern California turf stakes.

It’s hard to poke a hole in the résumé of Si That Tiger, the Blaine Wright trainee who will be favored in Sunday’s $50,000 Muckleshoot Derby, a 1 1/16-mile stakes on the Longacres Mile undercard.

Si That Tiger is 3 for 3 this year with sprint stakes wins in the Auburn and Irish Day at the meet. As a 2-year-old, after losing badly in his debut, he improved rapidly to handily win two in a row, including the WTBOA Lads Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs.

In 13 starts, Grand Slam Smile has won seven times and never been worse than third.

The ultra-consistent filly Grand Slam Smile has been part of Sean McCarthy’s stable for six months, long enough for the trainer to gain an appreciation for the five-time stakes winner.

“She’s all racehorse,” McCarthy said earlier this week.

In 13 starts, Grand Slam Smile has won seven times and never been worse than third, a record that leaves her at the fore of a field of 11 in Sunday’s $150,000 Solana Beach Stakes for California-bred fillies and mares at Del Mar.

Longacres Mile: California and Canadian shippers spice up Northwest's marquee race

Reed Palmer Photography/Emerald Downs
Slew’s Tiz Whiz, the 9-5 morning-line favorite in the Longacres Mile, won the race in 2022 and has finished third the past two years.

A trio of classy invaders – one from California and two from Canada – bring heightened intrigue to Emerald Downs’s richest race of the year, the $125,000 Longacres Mile, on Sunday.

While the 5-year-old Arrowthegreat is just 3 for 17 lifetime, all three of those victories have come at a mile. It’s a distance at which the Dan Blacker-trained gelding has earned his highest career Beyer Speed Figures, including a 92 and 91 in recent runner-up finishes at Del Mar and Santa Anita.
