Will Take Charge works a mile at Oaklawn on Friday morning.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Will Take Charge put in some prep work for the Kentucky Derby early Friday morning at Oaklawn Park, where he worked a mile in 1:40.80. He is scheduled to ship to Churchill Downs on Sunday, according to his trainer, D. Wayne Lukas.

Will Take Charge won the Grade 2, $600,000 Rebel at Oaklawn in his last start March 16, and earlier this week his connections made the decision to train him up to the Kentucky Derby. The other option had been a start in the Blue Grass at Keeneland.

Jay Hovdey: O'Neill getting ready for his second close-up

Benoit & Associates
Doug O'Neill and jockey Kevin Krigger will both be in the media spotlight in the run-up to the May 4 Kentucky Derby.

We’ll find out soon enough if there is a statute of limitations on heightened media scrutiny, or if Doug O’Neill will get credit for time served last year when he stage dives back into the Triple Crown mosh pit next month with Santa Anita Derby winner Goldencents.

Uncaptured (right), winning the Kentucky Jockey Club last fall, is among multiple contenders in a wide-open Blue Grass Stakes.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – With college basketball and horse racing being as wildly popular as they are here, folks may find delight – along with a touch of irony – in recognizing a tournament-style elimination being a part of the racing game Saturday at Keeneland.

This is the home of the 2012 NCAA champion University of Kentucky, where 3-year-old Thoroughbreds will try earning a berth three weeks hence in a certain race at a certain racetrack that borders the University of Louisville, Kentucky’s arch-rival and the newly crowned 2013 NCAA champion.

Weekend Warrior for April 13: Picks for Arkansas Derby, Blue Grass, Jenny Wiley

Shigeki Kikkawa
Den's Legacy may be sitting on a big race coming into Saturday's Arkansas Derby.

Saturday marks the last two 170-point Kentucky Derby preps of the year, although it should be noted that the Grade 1, $1 million Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park and Grade 1, $750,000 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland are not the year’s last races with available Derby points. Next week’s Lexington and the Derby Trial the following week are Derby point races, but they offer only 20 points to the winner. The Arkansas Derby and Blue Grass each offers 100 Derby points to the winner and 40 points to the runner-up, so these races will have a major role in shaping the Kentucky Derby field.

Kentucky Derby: Castellano will ride Normandy Invasion

Tom Keyser
Jockey Javier Castellano has opted to ride Normandy Invasion in the Kentucky Derby. He rode the horse to a second-place finish in the Wood Memorial.

More dominos fell into place Thursday as far as the riding situation is concerned for the Kentucky Derby, as Javier Castellano has chosen to ride Wood Memorial runner-up Normandy Invasion instead of two-time graded stakes winner Revolutionary, and Garrett Gomez was named to ride Vyajck.

Kentucky Derby's new numbers game an interesting exercise

Tom Cooley Photography
Falling Sky (inside), here winning the Sam Davis at Tampa Bay Downs, will shoot for a share of the 170 Kentucky Derby qualifying points there for the taking in Saturday’s Arkansas Derby.

As an analyst with Goldman Sachs, James Covello spends his days poring over numbers, a discipline that has come in handy lately for another passion, being as Covello is co-owner of Falling Sky, one of the 3-year-olds whose participation in the May 4 Kentucky Derby will depend on two things – how he performs on Saturday in the Arkansas Derby, and where he stands on the overall points list.
