Almandin caps return from two-year layoff with win in Melbourne Cup

Almandin, who missed nearly two years of racing because of a tendon injury, won his third consecutive start in Tuesday’s $4.55 million Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse in Australia.

Ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, Almandin (10-1) edged 18-1 Heartbreak City by a head after the two pulled away from 22 rivals in the final furlong of the two-mile race. Hartnell, the 9-2 favorite, finished third, beaten 4 1/4 lengths.

Almandin is trained by Robert Hickmott and co-owned by Lloyd Williams. It was Williams's fifth victory in the race and first since Green Moon in 2012.
