Hong Kong: Molly's Jade Star on an upward trajectory

The trainer Rickey P.F. Yiu appears to have found the keys to the 5-year-old Australian-bred gelding Molly’s Jade Star. The first was blinkers, which went on to positive effect six starts ago. The second was Happy Valley Racecourse.

After 17 Hong Kong starts at Sha Tin, Yiu gave Molly’s Jade Star an entry at Happy Valley on Oct. 30. Now Molly’s Jade Star has won two races in a row and looks very much the one to beat in the featured eighth race on Thursday night at Happy Valley.

Swinburn, rider of All Along and Shergar, dead at 55

Laurel photo
All Along, shown winning the 1983 D.C. International, won that year's Arc and then came back the following year to finish a close second in the inaugural Breeders' Cup Turf.

Former jockey Walter Swinburn, who won three runnings of the English Derby and the Breeders’ Cup Turf in 1996 in a 22-year riding career, died in England on Monday. He was 55.

No cause of death was given, but Swinburn had been suffering from epilepsy.

Born in England, Swinburn’s career began in 1978. He was best known for winning the 1981 English Derby on Shergar by 10 lengths at the age of 19, with his first mount in the race.

Swinburn won the 1986 English Derby on Shahrastani and again nine years later on Lammtarra.

Highland Reel looks for Hong Kong Vase repeat

Debra Roma
Seamus Heffernan wins his first Breeders' Cup race aboard Highland Reel in the Turf.

HONG KONG – Where has Highland Reel traveled? Africa? No. South America? No. Antarctica? No.

All other continents? Yes.

And it is not like Highland Reel merely shows up. The hickory 4-year-old has run top races all over the world, and on Sunday at Sha Tin Racecourse, he’ll try to win the Group 1, $2.1 million Hong Kong Vase for the second year in a row.
